Hello, 3 new baby chicks (picked them up from a farmer friend as fertilized eggs and my broody hen hatched them), was wondering what everyone thought about breeds. My guesses were Austrolorps and Barred Rock, my farmer friend is partial to heritage breeds. I plan to call her to hear what her...
Hi there, I have my first broody chicken, she started being broody about 5 days ago now. I heard back from my farmer friend that I can come and get some fertilized eggs from her (we don't have a rooster). The problem is that if we get them today, in 20 days from now (estimated hatching time)...
Man, what a bummer. My 2+ yr old girls bully, they certainly make their alpha statuses known to the other chickens.
My farmer friend called this chicken's a rooster back when he was 8 wks old, I was hoping she was wrong! Need to call her, she already offered to take him off my hands since...
Golden orpington chickens...I have two that were supposedly the same age when I bought them (8 weeks) at end of August. First pic has one of them, second pic below has both of them in it. What a difference, no?! Judging by their age when I got them, that puts them at between 5-6 months old...
You could make your nesting boxes to fit in the bay window (may have to cut the plastic in between those 3 smaller windows to do it, but it would be a space saver). I would have done that to mine if I had realized how much space the nesting boxes would take up inside the coop.
Pretty cold...
Here you go. Very basic. hardware cloth on almost all the windows and door except ran out and used double chicken wire on the last window. Works great. Lock on door at the bottom to lock them in the coop at night. One long tree branch inside for roosting bar, as well as another roosting bar...

I have a hill in our backyard. So the chicken coop (which is a re-purposed kids playhouse) is on the flattest part of the hill, with the run being a large portion of the hill. Well hidden with all the vegetation on the hill.
I built 3 triangular "chicken tunnels" which lead off from a...
Thanks Emma! I actually first wrapped the igloo in easy to use soft netting. It was pretty tough trying to get the entire thing lined with chicken wire. Then just ran some regular chicken wire around the bottom part since they can break the netting easily.
Hello, I have 4 chickens and a stationary coop/pen. I also made a portable smaller tractor that I can move around the yard with an old kids climbing igloo (wrapped it in chicken wire). I keep smaller containers for food, water, even a dust "bowl" for them, and I've tried putting a small square...

perchie girl, you were right. Thanks for suggesting I just be patient--she's been on the bars now the last 2 nights. AND the layers are now using the nexting boxes. So all is well in our world! Yay :)
Ok last night I updated their roosting bars, one is a 2x4 (with corners well sanded) and the other a much fatter pole (greater than 1"), and STILL the americauna that the boys call Dark Wolf wouldn't roost. I even picked her up and put her on the bar last night, but when I went out she was on...
Base is 12 inches (so 1 foot) by 11 inches. But the slanted roof means that the opening when they walk in is at 10 inches, and the back (top of the slant) measures 19 inches from the bottom.
I have 2 RIR, 2 white leghorns and 1 americauna.
