    The dreaded red mites

If they can live in this nesting box full of poison you know they're going to be hard to get rid of. Make sure you get a pesticide from your local farmers warehouse and do repeat sprays in coop and area around coop too. My pest controller said not to put chickens in for a day or so after you...

    The dreaded red mites

Forgot to mention. Burn any bedding material because they can lay hundreds of eggs and don't need to feed on birds for months at a time. I'm having a problem getting them off concrete. Somebody at backyard chickens here in Aus recommended hemp bedding as an alternative to shavings or straw. I...

    The dreaded red mites

Having the same problem in Australia. Severe red mite infestation that came into the coop with straw. The attached photo is of red mite in my dust bath that contains DE, pymethrin dust and wood ash. The insects are thriving in an environment that's supposed to kill them! Day four and I'm still...

Chicken run- best material for floor that's proven????

I did everything I could to prevent pests. Metal nesting boxes, dust bath, sprayed insecticide but still got pests. Day 4 and I'm still trying to get rid of the buggers.

Chicken run- best material for floor that's proven????

Try as I mite, couldn't keep these mites out. Glad I have cement and rubber perches so I didn't have to torch coop.

Chicken run- best material for floor that's proven????

. Update when I found this red mite infestation in my dust bath that contains D.E. pyrethin dust, wood ash and sand I removed shavings. I'm going to trial hemp instead. Hope the chickens don't start dialling for pizza at midnight!

Chicken run- best material for floor that's proven????

I had a cement floor with straw on top. It was working perfectly until I had a huge red mite and straw mite outbreak. I live in Australia so this might not be an issue for others. I will never use straw again from my local area. Cement is awesome. Just pressure hose and it's clean. I have some...

    Mites and straw.

You can't see the straw mites. Invisible to the naked eye. I just itched liked crazy and had rashes until the straw went. Good luck.

allergy to my chickens, mites, straw or hopefully something else?

I got a rash on neck and body after putting straw in run. Mites loved hiding in the hollows and biting me too. Itchy whenever I left the coop. I had red mites and straw itch mites in there in the thousands. Funny thing was I have never seen them in my coop which has shavings with dust, metal...

    Mites and straw.

I don't use straw anymore after a red mite outbreak. The cheeky things hide inside. Not sure if they came with the straw but they were only in the run and even in the dustbath area. None in the coop where i had dusted and used woodshavings. Spent days cleaning everything down. Shavings only for...

    Sick Salmon Faverolles

I was just doing some research. They are eating well but don't have any more blood in stool. They seem lethargic. Both birds feel light and have little breast meat - two symptoms of the disease! I think you might be right... sigh. I love these birds. I will follow your advice... if they are...
