    Eggs or Day Old

So, I’m now I’m wondering, should I toss some golf balls in there to pull out if I’m ok with her hatching her own eggs too? Then I can pull the golf balls after slipping the day old under her instead of her eggs?

    Eggs or Day Old

So, I’m still fairly new to chickening, but I would like to expand my flock next spring. I have a few needs I expect to go broody (4 buff orpingtons and from what I understand, my Silver Laced Wyandotte’s May go broody as well). I’m beyond excited to see what I get with my orpingtons roosters...

Hen found dead next to egg

I have no real direct answer to this, because I don’t know for certain, but my educated guess is that that egg is tomorrow’s egg, it just didn’t have it’s shell applied yet. It’s possible that the dog squeezed it out of her.

Dominant too vs the other guy.

I have three cockerels, 4 pullets and 10 hens. My cockerels are orpingtons. They are 6 months old, and so far, get along fairly well (one cockerel is the obvious outcast, but he is not picked on our pushed around in an overtly rude manner). They’ve been raised together and everyone seems very...

owning a roo in a small town

Have you considered asking your neighbors? They may not care and you may be worrying too much. I live in a small town, I have three roo’s and mine are legal but I’m back in the woods a bit. No one complains. I actually culled one before these three were crowing and one of my neighbors complained...

Possible Roosters, Pros and Cons of These Breeds?

I’ve not much experience, but right now, I have 3 Orpington roos, 2 chocolate, 1 lavender. They’re 24 weeks old and get along very well with each other and with my flock of 12 hens. They’re friendly enough I can pick them up with no trouble. They are free ranged, but do spend about half their...

    Best chicken waterers?

I’m curious about this. Why do they cut a hole in the side? What do they use to get the water out and where do they put it? The cap?

Kung Foo chickens and wacky races

My adults do all those things. It’s hilarious 😂

Do you think these two eggs are fertile?

To me, they both look fertile.

When can I expect my buff Orpington pullets to lay?

I got them in June. I just wasn’t sure because I have read orpingtons take their sweet time laying, but also with it being cold and darker, I wasn’t sure if they would still lay this winter or if they’d just start up in the Sprong with the rest.

    Fertile Cockerels

I am not sure. They were given to me in March, and I don’t know how old they were (nor do I think my friend actually knows either, he just grabbed me a pile and said ‘here ya go’). He gave me a roo also, but after he murdered a hen, he went to my freezer. They eggs were all fertilized up to that...

    Fertile Cockerels

At what point will my cockerels become fertile? They’re about 23 weeks old. The eggs I’m getting right now don’t appear to be fertile, but I am seeing them mounting the hens.

When can I expect my buff Orpington pullets to lay?

I ordered my hens online from McMurray Hatchery. They’re at least 15 weeks old, possibly 17, hard to say since they didn’t tell me an age when they sent them. Anyways, best I can guess is they will start laying sometime between October and December. Will they still lay? I’m in Michigan, and this...

How to not have younger birds eat the layer feed meant for older birds & vice versa

I’ve read two schools of thought on this. The first is put them all on the chick feed and supplement with free choice calcium. The other is to put them all on layer feed and be done with it. Downside to everyone eating chick feed, it’s expensive. Downside to feeding the chicks layer feed is...
