Our coop temps are ambient so often in the 30s in winter. We sometimes leave eggs out in the counter for a couple of days and then refrigerate. Question is because the eggs are cold when we collect them should they be kept refrigerated as soon as we collect them? Thanks.

TOP FIVE, growing extra food for your flock

Here’s our SE Alaska top 5 1. We grow a lot of lettuce - different varieties and the chickens will eat all of it. After it bolts and gets bitter they will still strip the leaves off of the thick stems. 2. Kale of course 3. They love picking wild blueberries when we let them out. 4. Any new...

My hens will make a purring sound when they feel threatened. It could be an eagle or raven flying overhead or a dog in the yard that spooks them. The sound they make is similar to a cat’s purring but more insistent.

We have an assortment of items in the coop includinga cement block in the coop for beak cleaning, a mirror and...

When I have herbs that have dried and lost culinary use I add to the coop bedding. It smells good but I have no idea if the chickens get any benefit.

I saw an earlier post about adding a xylophone to the wall for chicken entertainment. I’ve tested a few at our local thrift stores and they don’t seem to make much sound unless you hit them with the wooden mallet. Any suggestions welcome.

    North to Alaska!

Well they are more pricy than we would like. I give my hens a lot of supplemental food so they probably don't eat as many pellets. We buy meal worms from Amazon, they get a cup of bird seed every day and lots of greens that would be thrown out as they are too old for the grocery stores to sell.
