I disagree with everyone’s response that you need ‘more ventilation’ and would say you probably need active ventilation. I live in PNW too and unless you have a windy location you probably aren’t able to get enough moisture out with just passive ventilation.
Try looking into ‘active ventilation’...
I certainly agree that chickens are in more danger of frostbite than freezing. We did Vaseline on our 13 girls wattles and combs before the beginning of a recent cold snap (9 degrees during the day not including windchill) and during the middle. They went outside of the coop and run most days...
I personally wouldn’t put it over their roosting bars as that will pull the cold moist air past/over them. From the picture it looked like there is a window that could be ‘cracked’ open and maybe a small fan could be put there for more active ventilation? I would definitely want to either...
Took a minute due to holidays but here is where we are at!
The red door is shut at night and the main passive ventilation becomes the vent on top. The window does not open.
Initially the interior passive vents were open and it was much colder and wetter inside. They are now sealed with rigid...
I hope if you have a ventilation question you can read this and look at your coop to assess whether or not your ventilation is active or passive and which will help keep your animals happier and healthier!
Active ventilation: forces air movement.
Passive ventilation: relies on nature to move...
We have 13 chickens and our chicken coop is a single pitch 4'x8'x6-4'. We have ventilation along the front and back of the coop at the top that is 3.5". So total ventilation is 3.5"x16' (minus however many inches of stud). Each section is common centered stud distance apart, apx 15.75". The red...
Hi! New member and new chicken mom too. We started with 15 chicks and now have 14 laying hens. I wanted a fun variety chickens and egg colors so we got 3 each of: Ameracauna’s, ColorPak (Easter Egger), Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorp’s, and Dominant Copper Maran’s.
During my research of...
