I did communicate with Sand Hill via email. They seemed polite and the response was timely. They mentioned some weather issues that had gotten them behind but they were catching up. Hopefully mine will be coming in not too far behind the original day.
OK, so I have a question for all of you Gulf Coasters on here. I live near the coast myself and as many of us know, during a certain time of the year, the sea grass on the beach is thick as a carpet. So I was wondering... would this sea grass be OK to dry out and feed to my birds? I'm ALL for...
OK so here's a question for you all who raise meat birds. Do you keep your own breeder flock for eggs? Or do you just buy straight run chicks of your chosen breed, raise them up, and then butcher them all?
I ask this because I'm wondering for those who keep a breeder flock, how do you measure...
Wow! My green is showing. Haha I thought meaties was just a general term for any bird raised for meat. I wont have any CX's. Just raising some Orps for meat this year.
I agree CRAJ! On that note, does anyone have experience breeding in show birds to their production flock? I want to eventually use my Minorca's for meat and eggs. And I love the stories I've heard of the huge Minorca show birds. Any thoughts or advice?

I'm joining in with the kudos for this thread. I'll be sticking with it from now on. Well, most of my experience is not first-hand yet, but here's the plan.
I'm with bj in that I'm too far south for the cold to be a big deal. So when I was doing my research I was looking for a breed known for...
That's great to hear. I'm hoping to sustain my flock under their own power. But if I have to get some chicken of another breed so I can hatch out replacements a couple times a year I will. But broodiness is definitely a trait I'll be looking for.
To be honest I'm not too worried about having birds that meet the show standard. I'll be concentrating on keeping my birds true to their name "buff minorca's" and then on production. I'm sure I'll be looking around for other buff lines to cross into my own, but until I find some new blood I'm...
