    Chicken Breed You Dislike?

I know several other people have already stated this but polish. I have tried and tried to have success with raising a flick of polish. All the polish I have ever raised were silver laced hatchery quality so I may not be giving them a fair review. However all the polish I have ever owned seemed...

    Keeping silkies with pygmy goats

So me and my wife have taken a new step into the homesteading life. My question is can i have silkies in the same run with two female pygmy goats. The run is pretty large so spacing wont be an issue. My fear is the goats stepping on the chickens. Anyone have any experience or advice?

i had around 10 new silkies hatch in my incubator a day ago. All the eggs came from a silkie hen of mine who the day after removing all her eggs but 1 decided to go broody. The one egg she is sitting on has been under her for a couple weeks. Can I put the 10 new born chicks under her? My big...

    Silkie hen or roo

I bought this bird from a lady with a good reputation for her silkies in the area. She sold me this “hen” a couple of months ago. Today I put another pair of silkies in with my existing flock the roosters in the pen immediately went after the new hen and began breeding her. I have never seen...

Something killed my entire flock of silkies

The door that was open is basically one wall of the coop. The coop is a 4' 6" raised coop that I built i made it so one wall opens all the way up. My guess is when i let them out that morning i forgot to latch the door back fully then the dog went into the coop and out the chicken door into the...

Something killed my entire flock of silkies

I work night shift, I let my birds out at 7am when I woke up at 3pm and went outside all my silkies, 12 in total, were all dead. The coop door was standing wide open. All the birds were still in the run unmutilated just chewed on. There were dog tracks all over the place. Im almost positive the...

Silkie hens still not laying at 11-12 months old

So I bought 2 silkie hens and two roosters off a breeder from a poultry show back in November 2017. The breeder told me that the birds were around 7 1/2- 8 months old. I have owned the birds ever since. Both roosters started crowing about early January. The dominate rooster started breeding the...

Talk to me about chick bedding and food!

I personally use poplar shavings in coops and brooders. My father runs a sawmill so I have basically and endless supply. They don’t help keep the smell down as much as pine shavings but I keep them changed about every other week so it’s not a problem. I feed medicated chick starter to chicks and...

    Day 22 and no pips

Do not open the incubator no matter how much you want to. Put your head down near the incubator tap on it and say something like "hey" loudly, you should hopefully hear chirping or see egg movement. No egg movement or noises isn't always bad I just had 5 chicks hatch last night on day 22 that...

Filling the brooder with “filler chicks” good or bad idea?

Yeah sorry that’s what I meant by fill the brooder I mean just get some bodies for warmth. I have around 20 eggs hopefully going to hatch soon so I’ll have hopefully some more chicks soon. The only problem is I don’t really like any off the breeds rural king has so I hate buying chicks just for...
