Alright update here!
Everything is peaceful right now. I narrowed it down to the understanding that the leghorn feather picking/cannibalism was related to any change in the environment.
1st time started, when leghorns and Bielefelders were introduced.
2nd time it re-started was when they...
I do have some Bielefelder's. They don't lay as well as I would like. I have some commercial egg layer leghorns about 4 weeks old. I think I will keep the leghorns for egg laying and just keep a few Bielefelders to hatch out meat birds. I love the potential of 5 to 6 eggs a week off the leghorns...
Yeah, mine don't lay very well either. They did great in the winter, but not very well in summer. I get about 1 to 2 eggs per week per hen. I suspect they eat some eggs as well.
I bought some white leghorn hens to supplement the egg laying. The good part is they lay white eggs, so to keep the...
That has crossed my mind. Whelp we're gonna find out. I'll keep this post updated.
This morning one of the small leghorns figured out a way to part climb and part fly up the netting. She was in with the Bielefelders when I checked on them. So far she has maintained her manners, so I left her in.
I know Leghorns are layers. The fact is though all chickens are edible.
IF you keep chickens for mainly just eggs and you want to refresh your flock by hatching your own chicks, wouldn't it make sense to raise the extra cockerels as fryers?
Murray McMurray sells the frypan special as all...
UPDATE:
The chicks were in separate brooders in the basement. By week 4 they could easily hop over the 1 foot brooder border walls and basically began free ranging in my basement. Which it turns out was ok because they never strayed away from the food. This allowed the Leghorns and...
Yes, lots of space. I have a huge roll of cardboard brooder guard and made a very large circle on my basement floor that is 8 feet in diameter newspaper bottom covered with pine chips.
Oh and yes, I made two brooders and they are separate now.
I raised the lights to lower the temp. I still have to get a red bulb. I like the idea from azygous' post. I may just watch them and peck the little gremlins on the head when they go after the Biels. See if that works. I'll let you know.
I have a 100 watt bulb (spot). Not red. I will let the Biels heal up first and switch to a red bulb and try putting them together again.
If that is a temporary fix great, but will they grow out of this cannibalism?
Hi evryone, just joined BYC but have been lurking the forums as a non-member for months.
Great info here!!!
Here is my situation:
I hatched 9 Bielefelder eggs and purchased 12 White Leghorn Chicks (day olds). 2 weeks ago I put them all in a brooder that is about 8 feet in diameter made...
