Hi, PeckPeckPeck--
I haven't posted anything for a long time but I came back here for advice because I've been considering an Eglu Cube as well. I've had a number of cheaper wooden coops that just rot and have to be replaced; plastic seems promising, but wow, these are expensive. I live probably...
I'm in this spot now, too. One of my two girls died today. I looked outside and she was just gone--conked out and stiff. I'm bummed about this, and I know single chickens don't do well. I'm not sure where to start my search for another hen.
Well, dang, there's a new twist on this.
So far, no more raccoons, thank goodness. But now with two girls left, one healthy, the other one pretty much healed but not the same (droopy comb, blind in one eye), the healthy hen is bullying my poor survivor. And she's pretty bitchy about it--some...
I do have an electric perimeter fence but it's only about 12" high. I originally bought it to keep the dogs away from the enclosure. They aren't dangerous to the chickens but they were way too inquisitive and I planned to use it just to discourage that. As it turns out, they aren't a problem...

I'm checking into this on Amazon. It was recommended on a site that lists the three best raccoon deterrents. It's intended as just a motion sensor light that comes on with random movement, but...
Something (and I couldn't tell what, exactly) got into the chicken coop and killed one of my 6-month-old RIR hens. I had three total. My one of my dogs treed the killer but I wasn't brave enough to stand out there underneath the limbs and shine the flashlight up there. I was afraid of what I...
I think Roadie is on her way out. Her chest and neck look wet so I figure something (ears? nose?) is running. I'm not familiar with chicken ailments and have no idea why she's sick or with what.
This year I got three started pullets, two Barred Rocks because I've had such great luck with them, and to mix things up, a RIR. They were all laying and doing well, but about 7-10 days ago, Roadie quit laying and started losing the color in her comb. My roommate thinks she might be moulting but...
Wait--I've never seen a place where a chicken needed rescuing. I'm not being dumb or a smart a**, but I live in the 'burbs, closer to a city. Where do your chickens come from? Hoarders? Are they abandoned?
We had another couple of escapes before we located and fixed the hole in our security system. Last night after a lot of complaining and a few attempts, crabby Alpha finally gave up and went inside to roost with the other two girls. And I did clip her wings. There was apparently some jockeying...
With the loss of my previous flock of three barred rocks, I decided I didn't want to brood chicks in the house again. I really didn't have the room and the dogs were too curious. So I got three started pullets (really expensive!)--two barred rocks and a RIR--from a hatchery with a very old and...
I had a couple of barred rock pullets who did that and got me in trouble with the neighbors and the HOA. It happened only in the summer, but that's when everyone's windows are open. They even woke me up until I started wearing earplugs to bed. And they were definitely girls. They were faithful...
I ordered my girls from McMurray. You can schedule delivery with them, so my started pullets are coming in the middle of May. It'll give us time to get things ready for them. I've missed having chickens in the backyard! I ordered two barred rocks and one RIR. Yay!
