    Stray Turkey Hen

She only lets me get so close but she does not appear to have any white on her at all. Her tail is all brown and her wing feathers are a little lighter of a brown - but no white. She also doesn't have a very mature looking head, although I know hens don't get the same look as the toms. I still...

    Stray Turkey Hen

We have a stray turkey hen living in our yard! I had been hearing this strange rustling in the trees above our goats for about a week so I had been watching very carefully for a predator and then one morning after feeding there was a turkey hen walking around with the chickens! (we have...

    Eggs with stretch marks?

Thanks, the eggs all hatched just fine! I did have a couple losses but that's to be expected I suppose.

    Help! Mama attacked pipped egg

Sounds like things are progressing for you. The membranes around my chick started to harden, so I pulled it out of the shell being mindful of the remaining yolk sac (there was still just a little bit not absorbed and the "belly button" was still open pretty wide) and put it under mama. She...

    Help! Mama attacked pipped egg

I'm having the same problem. I have 2 broodies and one started pecking at it's first piped egg so I moved it to another mama who has already successfully hatched 2 chicks and has one piped already and she started pecking at the egg. I have the baby under a heat lamp and it's pretty active. I'm...

    Eggs with stretch marks?

Thanks! Definitely happy with the entire turn out so far. Mama's were great at setting and so far good at caring for the chicks. I haven't yet decided if I'm going to let mama's raise them or if I'm going to put them in a brooder after they are all hatched. One is in the process of hatching...

    Eggs with stretch marks?

Currently- no. I can take some later. I want to avoid disturbing the mamas and eggs as much as possible. They just look like stretch lines around the wides part of the egg. When I candle them they look dark like they should hatch any day.

    Eggs with stretch marks?

This is my first summer with my own chickens, my parents always had them growing up but they were never my responsibility. I brought home 3 one year old cochin hens and a roo last March. They laid really well all spring and then about 3-4 weeks ago one went broody and the other 2 followed in...
