I do have hardware cloth under the tarp so there's another level of protection. Mostly because I had nightmares of a predator jumping from my garage roof to the top of the run :(
If the wood frame itself is in good shape but the plywood is rotten then I'm wondering the issue was that the plywood wasn't treated. Could also be that rain was leaking into the shed. Following aart's advice - if you didn't want to wait for the next rainstorm, could use a garden hose and see...
Correction - he's 11 weeks. Forgot the pics last night so took some quickly this AM. The bucket behind him is 2.5 gallons, his head is about knee high to me - about 18" or so - he wouldn't stand still to be measured ;)
He's the only Jersey I have so I can't compare to others. The other chicken in the picture is a Smoky Pearl and the Jersey is now slightly larger. I can get a recent pic (he's a bit bigger now) and measure him after work tonite.
Did you ever find a rooster? I have a Black Jersey Giant about 9 weeks old that I'm trying to rehome because I only want hens. He likes to hop onto my lap if I'm sitting and allows pets but not so much while on the ground. Also likes to tap on my boots when I'm walking around but otherwise isn't...
Thanks for the tarp warning and the link! It's so hard to buy anything these days that isn't some cheap Chinese stuff :( I searched online for way too many days looking for a decent shed for coop conversion and even the expensive wood models had terrible reviews talking about how cheap and thin...
I forgot to add in my post above - if you're not into wood working and do not want to do a wood frame inside of the shed, you could use several fence posts (like pic below) pounded into the ground with just a regular hammer at each of those white colored inner vertical seams and at the corners...
If the wood is that soft then it probably won't take much for the saw to go through it.
But if you really don't want to go that route you could try strapping the shed together with this type of fabric ratchet straps (not really tight, just enough to hold it together horizontally and...
Agreed though I haven't bought those tarps yet.
However - here was my solution to attach a tarp to the front wall of the existing run that blocks the morning sun. The side of the tarp along side the door is attached to the run with carabiners at corners (wasn't attached at the bottom yet in...
I completely understand. I have a circular saw and can technically cut wood but hate doing so because the saw is a bit heavy for me (I'm older and not great shape). How rotten is the wood floor? Would it be possible to repair with wood putty, etc.?
If you remove most of the floor within the shed leaving the wood under the shed sides, eventually that wood will also rot away leaving you with no 'foundation' and gaps.
However... If you cut away most of the inside wood you could probably use something to jack up one side of the shed at a time...
Sometimes we get quite a bit of snow, sometimes very little to none due to weather pattern changes. It's not exactly a Woods design but similar as in it would be enclosed with tarp on 3 sides and top. I would definitely need to reinforce the frame thus me asking if anyone has done something...
