The last chick that hatched yesterday is now 24 hrs old. The rest are clearly thriving. This one is open mouth breathing and keeping its eyes closed a lot. Will wake up and peep loudly then back to sleep. It was in the brooder with the rest and temp is consistent there. Not sure what to do to...
Our birds are family for sure. I never realized how unique and interesting each chicken would be in their own right. And oh the therapy! I've cried to them, laughed at them, shared with them, cuddled, and been really unhappy with some of the bigger gals picking on the young ones. But I love them...
My name is Allison and I'm addicted to chickens. There. I said it.
I'm outside of Fort Worth. We have a few acres and a dozen feather-kids on the property. Our chickens are pets with benefits. Hi y'all!
I am near Hudson Oaks and I'd be happy to take a few rehomes as well. We all have our limits but we have room for a few more (which is crazy chicken lady for 20, right?).
I got my four australorps girls as laying adults who were not handled regularly, so mine are not the friendliest birds, but are not anti-social either. They came with an australorp roo who is extremely gentle and an absolutely gorgeous bird, though he does like to crow. I lend that to being...
Two reasons I wasn't entirely sure that was the case:
1. He is 18 weeks.
2. When the "offender" is put down and properly pecked, he finds his spot in my lap and settles in.
But that may be his way of controlling me as well?
Does anyone have experience with a jealous rooster? What I mean is if I pick anyone up other than him, he appears to get upset. Not to the point of "attack" or injury but he will pace underfoot until I put the other, attention-thief chicken down and then proceeds to peck or pull the offender's...
I actually bought a Netgear Arlo camera system (wireless, rechargeable, weatherproof, and can access from anywhere) for when I'm away! I love the girl that looks after mine but I like to see them. It's a bit of an investment but worth it for me. I use a second camera to watch my cats inside. :)
If they are older birds, make sure you quarantine them for a short while to ensure you're not getting your whole flock sick. If they are young'uns, introduce them a little at a time over the course of a few days. I would let my littles walk around with the big girls under supervision for a...
The cutest story I have isn't something new really as most of you have experienced it as well, but Hey-Hey is 18 weeks and decided about 5 days ago to attempt crowing. You know when you blow up a balloon then stretch the end between your thumbs and fingers to let the air eek out all shrill and...
