Compared to my Production Red, the eggs of my Brahma's are small, but they are productive. They are quite good at hiding and avoiding predators. My two are mix breeds but are mostly Brahma. One is white and one is light brown. The white one does not have feathers on her feet. They are...
I too am curious about when to use heat on my chickens. I only have 5 mix breeds in a rather small coop 5x4 elevated and insulated partially. I have a 60 w bulb on them to extend their light time. I am getting anywhere from 3-4 eggs a day, but I noticed yesterday the rooster was shivering...
I'm a firm believer in mix breeds, but I also have had many pure breeds. Before you pick a dog, please think hard about the life style you lead as well as say the "fuzziness" or temperament of a dog. Many dogs, BOTH small and large need exercise and if you can't provide that on a regular basis...
To clearify, Lucky is a Sussex roo, with two Production hens. I lost a white Silkie hen and one Production hen to a critter, and gave away two white Silkie roos. The new chick is a Brahma hen. Not sure any of this matters though.
Hi, I am new to this site, and new to having chickens. I have had some problems. First hatch failed, second hatch resulted in 7 chicks, but 6 died in 40 minutes at 2 days old. (??) I went out and bought 6 more to put with Lucky. These chicks are now almost 4 months old. I ended up having 3...
Yes, I'd say those are Production hens after what I have learned from BYC. I have three of them. Two of mine have some white on their tails. The third is all red. Thanks to BYC for the breed info. I was confused. Couldn't figure out if they were RI hens or NH Reds. Come to find out they...
I have 7, 11 week olds. I am new to chickens and was told to not name them if I wanna eat them. . . . I have no plans to eat them at this point. I have three all white silkies. . . two which turned out to be roos. I named one Elvis cause of his floppy feather do on top of his head. The other...
I know this is an old thread. I also have a Cane Corso and she is great with my chickens. I can leave her home all day alone with the chicks free roaming and she doesn't bother them. I actually think the dog, Aly thinks it is her job to hang out with them and protect them. After all Cane...
Wicked funny!!! I started with 4 eggs. None hatched. Got 12 more, 7 hatched, but only 1 survived (??!). Bought 6 babies, making 7 total, but now I gotta get rid of 2 cause I have 3 roos. And I really only wanted 4 hens. Chicken math is at least fun.
