The chicks in that bin varied in appearance, but also had 2 breeds per bin. I can't remember what they had in there labeled with the "Americanas" so maybe it's even my fault for grabbing the wrong ones.
I'll wait and see:). At first it was fun then just got confusing trying to figure it out. I think next year (unless I incubate or have a broody hen) I might try ordering straight from the hatchery. The shipping fees add up quite a bit, which is why I've gone farm store in the past. Thanks
Thanks. Are you saying you think all the pictures I posted are the FCMarans or Midnight Majesty? Or do you think the last chick (creamy belly) is something different?
It's Hoovers! Maybe my farm store had them all mislabeled. Wouldn't surprise me since they didn't know much about the chicks (vaccinated, unvacc...)
I'm just hoping they're pullets. Since I can't even tell what breeds some of them are, I can't guess if they're pullets vs roos.
Thanks! I looked up the hatchery and they actually have a good chick picture chart, but mine are older now so they don't quite look like the pictures. I now am questioning 3 of the breeds I thought I chose!
Do hatcheries sell crosses usually?
A quick google search comes up with almost the whole first page saying to use 2x4s. I do think however, that I've misunderstood branches, as further reading says just not thin, narrow branches. My chicks are 2-3 weeks old.
"Optimize Roosts:
Roost design matters. A two-by-four on its side...
I flipped the boards just now, thanks. They're still in our garage with the brooder plates, but some are starting to sleep on the roosts all night. tonight is 39 degrees. It's been 80 during the day, but we had a low of around 10 a couple weeks ago.
It comes up in several places (see below...
Welp, I guess it's a wait and see game huh? It's driving me nuts for some reason, not knowing what they are:). I think because I planned the flock carefully, with mostly egg layers and buff orpingtons for hopefully broody hens, and some fun bluish eggs.
I did see that also about cuckoo Marans. I didn't get a picture of the 2nd "Barred Rock" that is very barred.
The last 3 pictures are supposed to be the Ameraucana/Easter Eggers(creamy belly).
Branches would definitely solve the problem and I used to do that with my previous chicks, but I've read a lot of things that say round roosts are bad for their feet development and harder for them to tuck in and keep warm, so I'm trying flat/rectangular roosts.
My chicks are cute and growing well. I've noticed feathers on the "Barred Rock's" feet. I looked it up and found they could be Barred Cochins instead? Not exactly what I was going for! They are super skittish and very fast, so barely got one for pictures.
Also, my "Ameraucana chickens"...
My chicks are growing well, and some love using the little roosts (2x4s about 3 inches off the ground) in the daytime. The roosts are covered in poop though! It's really gross as they just sit in it. I'd like to cover them with something easy to clean, but don't want to discourage them or...
