We do have a tractor and jacks to help with removal. I was thinking that lag bolts could work. We did build a tree house that could be used as an in-law suite, so we do have some building experience
We have some, and I learn as I go. I could build entirely new coops, but I really don’t want to. We have added a gable roof that covers both the coops so that the access to the nesting boxes are not impeded by snow. We just have it resting on the top at this point, but I want to make it more...
That is the design I have. I don’t want to extend the bottom because it’s a safe space for them. I like your plan! I mainly want to add windows and venting to the top, so the load should be minimal. Thanks!
I would give her a brooding box around where she is. Make sure it has enough room to give her space to poop, since they leave the nest to do so. I’ve found that moving a hen and her nest results in breaking her. I’ve never had silkies, though, so I don’t know how they do with being moved.
I’m looking to raise the roof on my coops. I currently have 2- 5x12 chicken coops from Coops For A Cause. They are only 4’ tall at the height with an angled roof. I have to stoop over to clean it out, which is a major pain in my back. Is there an “easy” fix to raise the roof? Could I remove...
I use 2inch bird netting on my open, treed, fenced in area. It’s light-weight and allows snow (mostly) to go through. If it particularly wet snow or an ice mix it will sag. I got mine here https://www.smart-net-systems.com/bird-nets/game-bird-netting . It most likely won’t protect from...
I use hardware cloth underneath my runs (in nh) because of predators (raccoons, fishers, bear, etc.) and rats. I dig down a bit an add sandy dirt on top, then bedding. This way they can still dust bathe, but are secured at night. I also only use my “covered runs” at night or for a short time...
We didn’t notice anyone acting oddly. We had 1 of my older girls take a “weird stance” at one point, but then she went back to normal. I have 42 layers, so I’m not sure who laid it. Guess I’ll just keep an eye on them.
Hi, all! I found this gross little nugget in the nesting box today. At first I thought it was maybe a lash egg, but it’s solid bloody tissue. It literally looks like a beet. It does not smell. I know we have several viruses running through the flock. Any chance this could be a tumor that...
I just had a singlet hatch and it is a house chicken. She follows us around the house and steals food as I'm eating it. I have more chicks coming next week, but I think this one is supremely attached to us.
