Free to good home Fresno, CA

Hi there! I have 4 bantam chickens in need of a forever home. They were raised by a hen, so they are hardy outdoor and ranging birds. One is a bantam barred rock or Plymouth (rooster), and the other three appear to be Japanese bantams. I am in Clovis ca but happy to bring them to a surrounding...

Is my hen abandoning her chicks?

Thank you everyone- I let nature take its course and let the babies sleep on the roost- sure enough the chicks made it through the night and were out pecking around in the morning!

How long does a hen have to be broody before you can introduce chicks?

This year was my first attempt at this and introduced my chicks to my broody at three days lol. Don’t do this! It took four days of introducing and taking away the chicks because she did not want them. mom the last day broody hen was ‘tired’. They sit on the eggs and only get up once a day to...

Is my hen abandoning her chicks?

I’m wondering if this is normal mom behavior or should I intervene? I have a mother hen who was a surrogate to four bantam chicks. She took to them very well and has been a great mother for four weeks now. She’s been very protective of them, and introduced them to the flock. However now that the...

success introducing bantams and surrogate hen!

Oh I’m so happy! It has been a LONG week! And I made some mistakes along the way but I feel like celebrating! my 4 year old Speckled Sussex went broody this year (she usually does), so I went and purchased 5 Bantam chicks at tractor supply for her. Out of the 5, only one passed away (he was...

    Evacuation with Chickens

I just had to evacuate my mom from the fires. Here’s how we did it. Wrap the bird in a towel tightly. Her wings are tucked in. Her legs are straight out. Ducted taped the towel. FYI they will overheat- so our AC was on the whole time. These birds are never handled and yet we’re super calm all 45...

What if you get a roo?

I tell people who are looking into getting hens that this is the FIRST thing to consider when getting started. I live in a city where having a rooster is a BAD idea. So- as with all things- prevention is the best method. If you do not want the responsibility of rehoming or killing a Roo the...

    My First Coop Build

wow- that is a beautiful run! only suggestion- if you havent already- burrying the netting material (cloth wire it looks like) under the ground to prevent a preditor from digging under. Even if your in a city there's possum, raccoons, cats, etc.

Why Do People Buy Live Chicks From Breeders and Farm Stores‭?

I bought my first set of chicks from tractor supply. All were healthy. No one handles the chicks. Just the clerk who put them in a box. I’ve also purchased a POL puppet from a small breeder. She let me go look at the puppets and pick one. It was healthy and I had no problems with her. I’ve...

    No EGGS!!

Amazon has a roller bar that you add to the top of a 10 gallon bucket. You put bait on the middle of the roller bar. Rats run across the bar, slide off into the bucket of water. Then drown. My sister has one and swears by it. That way a chicken, cat, dog won’t fall victim.

    No EGGS!!

Depends on breed. I’ve got a four year RIR who lays 5 eggs a week still. But she takes time to molt. If your entire flock is the same age, they might be molting and slowing down for the winter.
