Official BYC Poll: What type of bedding do you use for your chicken coop in the summer?

Our chickens don't really get a bedding. In our new trailer coop there are slats in the floor which all the poop falls through. At night they're up on the roost, and during the day they're out in the grass.

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I don't have to do a lot of cleaning since the new coop we built has slats in the floor which the poop can fall through. (We built it on a trailer.) Of course poop can build up on the boards, but all I'd have to do it knock it through the slats.

    Mini-Classic Turkey Possibly Dying

Around two or three years ago we bought two mini-classic turkeys with plans to eat them for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately that did not work out, and we ended up keeping them. Around a year ago one of the turkeys died from sour crop due to eating orchard grass, but we still have the second...

    Overheating Chickens

I believe there's a pretty good airflow beneath the coop. I hadn't thought of giving them any electrolytes for the heat, but I will definitely see about doing that. Dosing the ground around them with water did seem to make a big different today.

    Overheating Chickens

No, the coop is too far away from any electricity source for a fan, and the nesting boxes do have wood blocking half the door to make them feel more protected. There's no shrubs around them, but they do hang out underneath the chicken coop all day. We generally have bottles of frozen water in...

    Overheating Chickens

Thank you! We're not quite in the desert, just the State of Jefferson. There's no sand, but earlier today we did get the idea of spraying the grass around the coop with a hose, and at least for the time being the temperature dropped drastically in that area. I later lured them out with some...

    Overheating Chickens

The past week, temperatures have been extremely high — being over one hundred degrees and even reaching one hundred and twenty degrees a couple of days ago. The chickens are laying under the coop all day and not moving to avoid the heat, and yesterday two of my Delaware hens died. This morning...

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

Yes, that is true. We normally do do that, but this time I'm not sure we had any on hand and forgot to order it.

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

Ah, okay. I appreciate the information. I may get some molasses to keep on hand for future chicks, then. Unfortunately, though, the last update on this chick's case is that I found him dead not too long after giving him egg yolk (though I'm not sure if he managed to swallow any). This morning he...

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

I will probably order some to keep on hand for this guy and if it ever happens again. However, since I don't have any at the moment, I think I will have to try feeding him egg yolk. I've given them some honey water, and I may try it again. Thank you!

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

Yes, but on hand I do not have anything simpler to give the chick without first ordering it unless I have him drink egg yolk, which I will also try. Thank you for the advice, though!

Is there any particular reason for skipping sunflower seeds, or is it just because I would have to break them up?

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

After a little bit a research, I will try giving him some crushed sunflower seeds and egg yolk to increase his vitamin E in case that it is wryneck. However, any other suggestions on what to do for him would be highly appreciated.:jumpy

    Ameraucana Chick Dying

One of my Ameraucana chicks which I got through the mail on Friday is being very dopey. I have already had one dopey chick die, but what's different about this one is that it has food in its crop and will drink water when I dip its beak in. It's just extremely weak. I'm also not quite able to...

    Poults just won't live!

That's good to hear! Yes, I've definitely had experiences with them flipping on their back and being stuck, though most of the times they kicked themselves upright again. Only floppy-neck couldn't, but there was a lot he couldn't.
