I have month old runners. I'm going to start taking my ducks out for pen time this week, and then hopefully next week they will be permanent residents in their coop. They've been out, here and there, for the past week for swims in their preform pond...and our run is almost complete.
I'm...
My juv' ducklings looove peas. They also really loved finely shredded carrot. I give sparingly, but when they hear the grater working they get to wagging their little duckling butts (it's so cute) and quacking very loud. We float both treats in a shallow dish of water.
I'm not entirely sure that a six week old would have sufficient feathers and oils to fend off the colder temp & water working together. It's quite possible that the duckling could not get back out and suffered hypo.
Sorry to hear of this...
Good question. I have been wondering that, myself.
I do know that ducks can start laying eggs around 5 months old. My little guys will soon be month-olds. And, man! They have grown!
We are finding that as well. We're not quite finished with our run, but we have a preform inside, up and running. Our runners have had a few outside visits to it and, yeah, all clogged up all the time.
Mine were quite scared of me for the first week or so, until they figured out that I'm the one with the delicious greens treats. They call to me when I wake in the morning, trying to get treats. It's hysterical, they stretch their bodies up as far as they can get to see over the brooder edge...
Aaakkk! I just had to look at all the bee pics!! I can handle the snakes, mice, rats.....but bees! I have always been terrified of bees! (got the itches, now. lol) I just had to look...And, yes, I learned something new today as well. No cracked corn for my birds .
Cute dog and duckling.
My dog hates squirrels, but now that I think...she doesn't really chase the backyard birds...pretty much ignores them. But squirrels? She'd probably go through a glass window to get at one.
Unless it was a smaller predator, but, still...aren't 7 week old chicks pretty big? I have three week old ducks, and they are near as thick as a small chicken.
If you are betting it's someone stealing them....I had a friend who had fishing equiptment stolen from his back porch and garage, more...
That's how I feel....never unattended. Our dog has been crate trained since a pup, and sees it as a safe and quiet place. We do lock her crate door at night since the ducklings have been here. I don't want to take any chances without us around.
I do hope their interest in her wanes, once they...
