Yes, I raised ten Bronze Broadbreasted turkeys two years ago and got hooked. I couldn't stand to kill them. I cried when my husband dispatched them. I live in turkey country and all the locals, including my husband said that turkeys are vicious and will attack anybody. Even my big old toms were...
I am a grandmother again. My "Beauty" hatched out nine ducklings. "Sweet Pea" is due any day. "Merle" is not due until the end of May. BEI's are my favorite. I also picked up three Royal Palm poults and two Bourbon Reds. It's too easy to become an animal hoarder. It's a good thing I have my...
My BEI hens are hunkered down on nests right now. The first hatching should be next Weds. I am hoping to have some crested ducklings. None of the adults are crested but one of my drakes must carry the gene. Last year I had several crested babies. I am saving up to get some dutch hookbills from...
I live in Annabella, Utah. It is a small town a few miles south of Richfield. I raise Black East Indie ducks, a few banty chickens and a newly aquired royal palm turkey. Welcome to Backyard Chickens.
I have a month old Royal Palm turkey poult. I bought three hoping that at least two would survive, they didn't. I found a neighbor that has Royal Palms, but only adults. He will give me one, but I don't know what sex to ask for because I don't know what gender my poult is yet. Help!
I got turkey poults for the first time this Spring. They are very curious and like you said, seemed bored. I got them some of those small, plastic, balls that are brightly colored with bells inside. They are really cat toys, but the poults loved them! I also put some of those stringed parakeet...
I got the ducks and chickens all at different times. No problems. I've even got a little hen that took over one of the duck's nest and is sitting on both duck eggs and her own chicken eggs. I know they hatch at different times, but she doesn't seem to notice that there is a difference in eggs...
From your photo, your little baby looks like a Pekin duckling. Most wild species are brown, tan, and yellow mixed. I wouldn't worry about Fish and Wildlife taking it away. I love "duck" people. It makes my heart happy to see what lengths people will go through to help a small, helpless, animal...
I have ordered all my ducklings from Ideal. They have been really good to work with and will let you order small numbers. Their prices are reasonable too. I would love to order some silkies but I only want a few. I thought about ordering adults but they are expensive. Some of the breeds that...
I have had both Cayugas and Black East Indies. The Cayugas are black and are a lot bigger than the Black East Indies. The Black East Indies have a gorgeous, iridescent, green sheen to the feathers. Both are very docile and friendly breeds. As ducklings it's hard to tell male from female, but...
I have 14 ducks, a bantum hen, and two bantum roosters. They are penned together and free range together. The only problems I had was with some leg-horn hens that tore up my ducks' nests. The bantums have been no problem. My roosters actually snuggle up against my duck hens when they are cold.
I started out with some Roens that I picked up from our local IFA store. That was it, I was hooked! I went through Khaki Campbells, Cayugas, Magpies, Pekins, Runners, Blue Swedish and finally Black East Indies. I am now sticking with Black East Indies only. I have had them for about 10 years. I...
The apple cider vinegar really does work well for many different problems. I put it in my turkey poults' water and in my ducklings' water along with the little packets of electrolytes. I have never lost poults or ducklings. All have done great.
