Thanks so much for the visuals. I guess I do have hope they are not all roosters. I thought my ameraucanas were tough to sex but these seem harder at this age. The dark brahma I would have sworn was going to be a hen based on comb and temperament but feather pattern made it much easier than...
I think I am conflicted about the possible mottled hen because in the picture above its comb is the same color as the brahma head in the same shot. I believe that one to be a rooster due to its color pattern as a dark brahma. The white shoulders and uneven pattern would make this a rooster...
I have two 9 week old brahmas. I am leaning towards cockerels on both but holding out hope for one to be a hen. The mottled with black back I am guessing roo, The comb color of the second mottled is lighter but still dark enough that I am undecided if hen or roo.
My hatch was complete on Saturday 3/30. 17 hatched out of 22. One died during zip, another had piped or the egg got cracked during the hatch.
The last two hatches were difficult. The first had some crazy goo coming out of it and I thought it was dead but it started zipping so I left it go...
I am trying to get another photo, but with 15 chicks now in the incubator I can't get a good shot. It looks like it might have piped at another location since the last time I checked. I am really hesitant to open the incubator to take some of the chicks out and make things worse.
I now have...
Lockdown yesterday, no pips this morning. I had to block off my view of the incubator so I would stop staring at it. I know they are not due to hatch till Saturday but that is soooo far away. I'm obsessed and so glad I have somewhere to share with people who understand.
I put my incubator in lockdown this morning for my barnyard mix eggs. I think I probably should have done it yesterday but I am still struggling with the timing, do you do lock down at the beginning or end of day 18? Once I removed the turner I notice about 3 or 4 eggs are rocking slightly...
I am on my second hatch in a NR360 and have been moving my thermometers around with varied results. I noticed that if I put my Govee in the very middle it averages 97 degrees. The inside ring around 98 and the outside ring 99.5. I had to set the incubator at 100.5 to get the 99.5. There is...
Did my day 14 candling yesterday and didn’t pull any. Had three that I wasn’t sure about. They were blue and olives and they are so hard to see through. Looking forward to taking one more peek on day 18 at lockdown. Get excited for hatch day next Saturday.
Can’t wait to see everyone’s...
I set 22 eggs from our barnyard last Saturday. One white egg was infertile and another egg had a blood ring so down to 20. This is only my second hatch so I am still learning what to look for when candling. I have a lot of blues and olives so it has been a challenge to see much.
I have a...
March 9th would be a good date to set my second batch this year of BYM chicken eggs. My first batch is on day 4 now. I am new to incubating and am learning so much here. My daughter wants a flock of laying hens to sell eggs. We have raised meat hens the past two years and are looking...
