    Hens pecking rooster

I wondered if it was a form of grooming since he isn't too concerned about it. Good to know its a sign they all get along at least. I'll keep an eye on it.

    Hens pecking rooster

I have buff orpingtons, 7 hens and 1 rooster, all between 5 and 7 months old. All 7 hens are laying now and everyone seems to get along fine, the rooster treats his hens like a gentleman. However, he seems almost too nice because he will stand there and just let the hens peck his comb and...

    Making a larger hoop coop?

Lol! I love vibrant purple, so I asked for the most violent shade of purple paint the local store had. I'm quite pleased with it 😁

    Making a larger hoop coop?

Inside the coop. I divided the 12ft length at 5ft for the storage half. Nest boxes on the floor with doors into the storage half. Repurposed a free storage cabinet and cheap screen door. Built a poop shelf and planning to build a broody pen/injury pen under the other half of the poop shelf. I...

    Making a larger hoop coop?

Inside the run. 4x4 posts sunk into the ground and added dry concrete mix around the post bases for added support. 2x6 beams across the top to attach the cattle panels to. The oak branches had to be brought in before we put the cattle panels on. The tarp is 12x20 a heavy duty 16ml one from...

    Making a larger hoop coop?

Hardware cloth everywhere and buried along the entire edge of the coop and run. Hardware cloth over the windows, and metal window screen at the roof overhang to keep wasps, birds, and bats from flying up and in (but still allowing air flow). I plan to trim the screen and add another 2x4...

    Making a larger hoop coop?

The outside. The coop is 12ftx8ft and the run is 16ftx20ft. Interior height of the run at the center is over 10ft high. I still need to put shingles on the coop roof before winter but it's watertight as is with the tar paper.

    Making a larger hoop coop?

It's working well so far! I'm waiting to see how it holds up through winter. But so far no issues with storm gusts or a young child repeatedly bodyslamming into it (it's bouncy, much to his delight 😅). I'll post some pictures.

Buff or lavender orp rooster - any pros/cons?

I ended up getting the buff rooster. Thanks all :)

Buff or lavender orp rooster - any pros/cons?

I'm getting buff orp hens and I have the choice between a buff rooster or a lavender rooster. All hatchery stock, American orps as far as I know. I do plan on letting hens raise chicks, so I was curious if there is any difference in buff vs lavender roosters for maintaining a healthy flock. The...

    Nest box questions

Will a broody hen abandon her nest if I move it from the nest box up top to the broody bay? I suppose I can lock her in with it for a few days to be sure.

    Nest box questions

Still building the coop and now I have nest box questions. Thinking out loud, and willing to take advice. I built this shelf (30" high off the floor) to put the nest boxes on. The area underneath I planned to fence off for a sick bay/ introduction pen/etc. Is this too high for chickens? Even...

Leaf bedding, any concern of bird flu?

That's true, and I could always not use the very top layer of a leaf pile to be a little more safe.

Leaf bedding, any concern of bird flu?

I'm still building the coop and run before chickens arrive and trying to decide on bedding for the run. I'll likely use pine shavings or hemp for in the coop with poop boards. But the run will be 16x20 and is sand based (dry sand pine plains of northern MI here) with a thick layer of pine...
