Will young rooster ever accept (former)head hen?

Hello chicken folks! I’ve been waiting and hoping for this problem to resolve...but it sadly has not. Thought I would check with the experts! I have a small backyard flock for 3 years now. Last year I had 3 hens (BO, BR, and a silkie). BO is in charge and everyone got along. Silkie went...

10 month RIR found dead - eggbound?

Opened coop this morning and found 10 month-old RIR dead under roost. This is my first flock and first loss. 4 girls, same age: 1 BO, 1 PBR, 1 silkie, 1 RIR. Everyone gets along, 20 sq. ft. coop, 60 sq. ft. run, layer crumbles plus oyster shells and grit free offer. BO and PBR started...

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Thanks Jenniferlamar70 :) I will keep MPC in mind in the future. I only had space to add 1 or 2 birds and wouldn't meet the minimum shipping requirements this time. I read in one of your recent posts that you feel more confident checking sexing your silkies now that you can check for saddle...

Hello all, what do you think about this 13+ week Silkie? I'm new to chickens and even newer to Silkies...keep going back and forth about this bird. Posted on Silkie Sexing site too but hoping to get some more opinions here. He/she doesn't really act like a hen or roo, but often stands more...

    silkie sexing

Hello all, what do you think about this 13+ week Silkie? I'm new to chickens and even newer to Silkies...keep going back and forth about this bird. He/she doesn't really act like a hen or roo, but often stands more upright. Is that a sure sign of roo?? It is at bottom of pecking order (with 3...

    Silkie thread!

Hello NancyH, Not sure where you are in Michigan, but I might be able to help... I am in Ann Arbor and have a similar backyard flock (3 standard pullets almost laying, and 2 silkies around 12weeks-old). I'm new to chickens and originally was looking for 1 Silkie, but the farmer I purchased...

Not Sure if You've Got a Pullet or a Cockerel? Click here! thread 3

Thanks for your help, junebuggena. Those ages seem more appropriate. Soon after bringing chicks home I emailed the farmer about which parent was barred, but didn't hear back from him... I would assume it's more common for a standard barred roo to mate s Silkie hen than Silkie roo to mate...

Not Sure if You've Got a Pullet or a Cockerel? Click here! thread 3

Hi all! I love reading and learning from this thread - thanks to all that give their time to make it possible. Earlier this summer we added 2 chicks to small flock - 1 Silkie & 1Silkie mix. The farmer said they were 7 weeks. Now they are about 13 weeks. These chicks are still peeping and...

Thanks summerbe123 and junebuggena! I purchased this "4 week pullet" 3 weeks ago from McMurray Hatchery. Here is a photo the day it arrived. Just glad it's a barred rock pullet as my last 2 turned out to be roos. You guys are so helpful - thanks!
