Thanks all. Have been giving it poly-vi-sol (without iron) and giving drops of water as well. It seems to be doing better today (at least it's not shaking!). Keeping a close eye on it till and nursing it the best I can! I'll try some scrambled eggs later to see if the sickies want some of that.
Another one of our chicks (a jersey giant chick) dropped down on the ground and started scratching its head both sides while screaming. We immediately separated it from the other chicks and have it in a "sick tank." I've given it vitamins and cleaned the brooder and put very little dust in there...
We just got a shipment of chicks today and noticed that one of them seems to be shaking and moves sideways and backwards when it moves. I did the Homemade Electrolyte Recipe that I found on the site but can't find what could possibly be wrong with the chick. Its head isn't pointed up and legs...
Kept the live trap out there every night these past two weeks and ultimately caught two skunks which were promptly dispatched. I think they came across the duck when she was sleeping and the rooster when he was sleeping as well. Since the two skunks have been taken care of we've had no other...
Sorry for not replying! We isolated him by bringing him inside. Cleaned his wounds for the first two days and gave him antibiotics. He healed up and now is back and happy with his ladies outside! :)
About a week ago our rooster survived skunks attack with only a loss of a spur (last Thursday). I took him inside and cleaned and wrapped his wound and by Tuesday he seemed well enough to go back outside. He and the other rooster had some fights that day and it was established he was no longer...
We have two muscovies out there laying on eggs and they hatched two ducklings (one on Thursday, one on Friday). When I went to check on the ducklings just now I found one of them dead having been squished. Should I move the remaining one indoors with a heating lamp/etc or let the mama's continue...
Oh wow thomasboyle that's a really clever idea! I'll have to get some big marshmallows and try it out!
So the plot kind of thickened... yesterday morning when I went to let the birds out the rooster had been attacked. He had been in the dog run within a dog cage (since he was in isolation due...
Raccoon. It tried to kill our rooster that was in isolation. Rooster was in a large dog cage in a dog run and the raccoon reached in and tried to get him. Lots of feathers and he lost a spur but he survived. Now to catch a raccoon....
Our female mallard got really headstrong in the past week and went into hiding at dark instead of going to the enclosure (like she had been doing for three months) at night. Two nights ago I wasn't able to find her after searching so had to call it a night hoping she had hunkered down somewhere...
Put in three muscovy eggs to see if any would hatch and ended up with one duckling (trip to get a companion in the works so it doesn't grow up alone). Here's the newest member of our flock:
Shortly after hatching on Monday!
Today!
