Update - I was watching his (still larger) feet closely yesterday while he was moving around on uneven ground and realized his toes don’t curl… at all. So when he takes a step, his toes stay completely straight and unengaged… which is why he is wearing flippers and why he still sleeps on the...
Wow thanks for the insight! They certainly look a lot more like your cochin-of-sorts chicks than my other orps! The male is still VERY clumsy and worn out a lot. He still gets hoarse every afternoon and loses his voice. He spends much of his time laying down (and he still goes down...
It could just be a bad time of year for rehoming. Everyone who hatched chicks in the spring is trying to unload roosters right now as well. You may have better luck later in the fall when there’s less supply? I had to rehome a rooster last fall, and it took about a month to get any legit...
This. My coop is in an area that doesn't offer any shade, and the afternoon sun just cooks everything. Here's some of what I've tried with varying degrees of success:
I put up shade cloths like these (attached to T-Posts) and made sure the shade blocked the coop from the afternoon sun. On...
Annnnnnd just noticed this morning he's also sprouted some feathers on both feet/legs within the last week. Not full-on fluffy feathers (yet?), but not just wayward stubs either. 😑
Right? It was the same kind of response when I emailed to tell them 2 chicks died during shipping and 2 were looking pretty bad. Their response was basically a pretty cold "Turn the heat up. Which ones died?" Which would have annoyed me even if I didn't have 2 young kids sobbing over dead...
I need to dig through my chicken supplies and see if I have some brewer's yeast that's not expired. If not, I'll pick some up tomorrow when I go out. I didn't even bother responding to the hatchery's "don't worry about it, they're just hot" email. When this started, the highs were only in the...
Kolmback Flockmaker (20%), plus they get quasi free range time (large fenced area) most of the day. I had the age on the first one
wrong. She’s older than 5 yrs - more like 7 or 8 yrs old, so getting up there in age and slowing down. The Lav orp has recently had a stubborn round of sour crop...
I took your advice and emailed the hatchery with the weights, photo of the small vs lg chicks, and video of walking. They said they do not see any issue, they are just "big" and it's all feathers and they are just laying around because it is hot and I shouldn't worry about it. 🤷♀️
Gold Laced Orp M: 4.4lbs
Gold Laced Orp F: 4lbs
Buff Orp F: 2.6lbs
Lav Aust F: 2.6lbs
I weighed my other Orps while I was at it:
5 yr Buff Orp: 5.1lbs
3 yr Blue Orp: 6.9lbs
3 yr Lav Orp: 5.1lbs
Buff is not a bantam, and she's "normal" compared to other Orp chicks i've raised. Same with the Australorp in this group.
Just wondering on tracking weight, would I be watching (expecting) too high weight gain or too low?
Not sure what I'd even tell them, or that they'd even care...
Thanks for confirming I’m not losing it lol. I kept thinking it looks like a growth spurt that went wrong, just based on timing of it all.
On weight monitoring - am I watching for too much or too little weight gain at this point?
