Hello I have had no experience with this, but my instinct would be to cover the cracked end with a small piece of cling wrap- I think in the US it is Ceran wrap. It is used on burn victims to help prevent moisture loss and prevent infection.

I have never seen them in that situation. Other birds raise the alarm sometimes when a snake is around , and my flock just go onto high alert. I have never found a snake pecked to death.
I think a mother hen would possibly would and a braver Rooster than mine might also.
