Hi there!
I read an article yesterday about feather sexing.
It says that there are 2 sets of feathers on a chicks wing - the primary and the covert. The primary feathers are right at the tip of the wing and the covert a little further back.
On a hen the primary will be much longer than the...
I contacted my fertile egg supplier this morning to tell her we'd had a hatch and she told me to feed the chicks hard boiled egg for a week or so.
I was initially shocked! Really..... hard boiled egg! They've just come out of an egg!
So, I Googled it! God Bless Google!
Apparently it's a...
Another update for you all. All 6 eggs have hatched! The last little fella was waiting for me this morning when I came down!
I have moved the hen and her chicks to the broody coop and out of the communal coop where she decided to sit! And the move has gone very well, they've settled in...
It's not been too bad for the last couple of days.... been fairly dry! Got washing dried too! Happy days but last week was a total wash out! I'm on the western coast so the weather is very dodgy!
Was just reading about your rooster! Hillarious! My broody has just hatched out 5 eggs (one to go...
I had to pay for my fertile eggs too - would be great if my neighbours would tolerate a boy! My thinking on letting her do as she pleases is that if she makes her bed and is quite happy to sit there, you might have more success with getting her to sit tight, rather than trying to get her to sit...
Would you consider leaving them where they are? Is that an option for you? My broodie refused to be moved, so we worked around her - stubborn little madam!
I am but under a broody! We have 5 out of 6 hatched. The 6th is pipped but seems slower than the others, although this may not be the case at all! Hope all goes well for you!
Another update:
Number 5 has hatched! So one more to go and that one has pipped! The older of the chicks have been nibbling on chick crumb - Mummy doing a great job showing them how it's done.
Hopefully all goes well with the remaining egg....
Just an update on my previous post (above)
Yesterday at 4pm she got up for a bite to eat etc and I checked the nest and low and behold a beautiful little yellow ball of fluff was sitting there cheeping loudly.
I came down first thing this morning to check her and decided to lift and get a...
