I freeze blocks of ice to put in their water. Usually take them some in the morning, and again in the afternoon.
Yogurt, chopped cold zucchini or cucumbers. Cold watermelon or cantaloupe. Frozen fruit.
Put shade cloth on the run. Frozen vegetables.
With my previous flock (I moved and didn't have chickens for a year or so) I had the standard feeder, and the waste was ridiculous. I don't know how much your chickens are wasting, but it may not have so much to do with the sunflower seeds as it does with the way the chickens eat, knocking stuff...
At my last house I dug out about 6-8 inches all around, put down hardware cloth (I'd use vinyl-coated as it will last longer) and then cement blocks for the coop and run boards to sit on. The hardware cloth came up and over the cement blocks and the vinyl coated steel wire I used to cover the...
Unfortunately, there are other reasons to not be able to buy feed besides closure of a retailer.
There could be further limitations on what stores can stay open, or their hours could be cut.
There could be a disruption in the supply chain. Manufacturers may not be able to get the ingredients...
I have to admit, I have never had a chicken molt--ever. Once or twice one or two lost a few feathers. I have never figured out why, although my other chickens (I moved two years ago and got new chickens last year, but had them for 6-8 years previously) free-ranged most of the time, and I have...
I forgot to mention Rugosa Roses. the hips are huge, and the chicks love the seeds inside. I just split them open and let them pick at them. They are invasive, so good to plant in a bucket or pot.
Also, a few years ago, I had let a few carrots go to seed. My husband was sick and I just didn't...
I just ordered 22 lbs of dried mealworms from Tasty Worms I've only got 7 chickens, so that is good supplement/treats for months. But, at least they're still in stock there.
I had been stocking up on chicken feed over the last couple of months, buying a bag or two at a time--I get the organic feed and they don't carry much. Thank goodness I've stocked up, since I went early last week, and they had none of what I buy. Who knows when I can get more.
I have been buying...
Hi, I built my own run at my last house, and it was an odd shape. We sank the posts. I'm not a carpenter and can't tell you what would be the best way to anchor the run and posts if you don't want to sink the posts, but that seems like a problem.
Also, chickens scratch up an amazing amount of...
I've only raised from chicks once, and here's what I did, for what it's worth.
I got 7 chicks, and they start to stink after about 4 days. As soon as they start eating, their poop starts stinking. I had saved a couple of larger boxes, (the larger one was maybe 4 1/2 feet long by 2 or so feet...
My chickens (7) always used the same nest box, until one day this week they must have been lined up outside the same box, and I found two eggs nearby in the coop. Yesterday there were 2 eggs in the box neighboring the preferred box. So, even though the guidance is 2 chickens per box, I think you...
My extended chicken run is about 30 feet long, and 6 feet wide. I have one spot in it that has narrow (1/2"x1") wire fencing on 2x4s on the ground, such that plants can grow through the fencing without the chickens scratching them up. Right now, in January (albeit a very mild winter so far) I...
I've had chickens for about 10 years or so, except for the last two years, after I moved. I just got chickens again in June.
I had gotten pullets from a local hatchery before, a cross between White Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds. Very nice chickens, great layers. But my husband passed away...
