    Funny Chicken Names

We have three hens and a rooster. Only two hens are named: Hen Solo and Laya. We're trying to think of the third name, and are open for suggestions. Our rooster is Donald... he was named first. Donald has a very large comb, which has fallen over. His comb is over. A comb-over. Donald Trump. :)

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

I did understand the raccoons were the predators you were referring to, centrarchid. Thank you for your insight. Good idea about the bigger coop, Michael Apple. I think it would help!

Well, that's an interesting point about losing fewer chickens in a tree than the henhouse. We'll think on that. Meanwhile, Daddy the rooster was doing better today, so they tell me. Eating, drinking, interested in his surroundings, hanging out with the girls and pecking away. It looked like he...

Now there you go. I can wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts here; I really HATE those coons. We do have a henhouse, and Daddy spent three days in there... I locked him up at night, and opened the door during the day. He had feed and water, but I think the rest of the flock got most of...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

Our poor adult rooster, Daddy, the one I disparaged in this thread, was screaming his head off last night... my son saw a raccoon running across the yard with our poor chicken in his jaws. My son was able to run the beast off, and Daddy is alive today, but I think he's in a lot of pain. Darned...

I'm not sure there are opossum here in Arizona... and raccoon tracks are quite distinctive. Plus, our neighbor had all of his chickens killed by raccoons about a year ago. They have been around. We do have a trap set, and apparently that's how they caught the raccoons before. Good call on...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

I think I may owe Daddy the Rooster an apology. :( We lost two more chickens in the last two weeks... both of them with just their heads destroyed, both of them hens. In one case, the rooster's distinctive feathers were found at the site, originally seen as "evidence" that he was the culprit...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

Well, you caught me on that one. :) I am only guessing that they starved; the next door neighbor said that there were about 10 chickens when the house was abandoned, and there were only 5 when we got there. We found several old bird carcasses about; I suppose I can never truly know what they...

Heat stroke killed one of my chicks, one other is damaged

Ah, I'm sorry I didn't see this post until now! Thank you for the encouragement, and the chicken lovers' fellowship. :) I really didn't know that the darned things had so much personality... who knew? And chicks have to be just about the cutest little creatures God ever made. :) I'm not sure...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

I have stated many times, these chickens are free range, abandoned by their former owners. "Poorly managed" fits quite nicely; I do what I can as I learn about chickens, but I started rather backwards from most people who "manage" their flocks correctly... I started with no knowledge, no...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

This is all good information! "Daddy" is very laid back with people, and has even been patient with our idiot Corgi, when she (very occasionally) runs at him... he simply stands his ground, and she backs off in confusion (aren't birds supposed to run?). He is protective of his girls, and has...

I think my adult rooster is killing our adolescent roosters... is this normal?

We "inherited" our chickens by buying a foreclosed and abandoned home... there were 5 chickens roaming around, three hens and two roosters. We started feeding them, and have learned to enjoy them. They are still very much free range, though. About three months ago, the roosters got in a huge...

dog killed 15 hens and one is left with dog 2 dog bites. I have baytril. but not sure what to use.

You really are doing so much for her! I would be sick to death about it, too, but what could you have done differently? Sometimes stuff just happens. My dog doesn't love the chickens, but she has learned to respect them. She wanted to chase the little babies at first, but our little bantam...

I think you have done an amazing job with your hen. She's lucky to have you! We kind of want a bigger dog (for our protection, we live in a bit of a dicey neighborhood), but I am afraid of this kind of thing happening. Our Corgi isn't too much of a threat to the random bad guy, but she is VERY...
