    New Rooster While Brooding

Thank you, all who responded. Based on what you are saying and what my gut tells me I think I'll just hold off on introducing a new roo for now. I have one broodie who has been sitting a week today. But some complications and drama on Saturday of first time broodie and me trying to get her...

    New Rooster While Brooding

HI, I did some searches but couldn't find any commentary or advice on adding a new adult rooster to a flock with a brooding hen. I know quarantine issues & I know introducing new chickens but what I don't know is if it puts greater risk on the brooding hen to add a healthy adult rooster...

First Time Hen hatching clutch - questions

Yes, thank you. I have my first free range broody hen in my coop and I’m making some decisions on what to do with her there. This is helpful information.

    Rats!

It depends on how big the rats are. We lost 6 week old chicks to rats last year. I ended up locking the chicks in a dog crate at night until we could move them to the rat proof coop. The secret to that is hardware cloth even on the floor under the sand. I also bought a case of rat...

    Hawks: fishing line?

Nice big space you have! We did the fishing line much like yours when we penned our chickens. Our spacing looked similar from what I can see. We live in a farming/rural community and have lots of open spaces and predators. We’ve never had a bird lost to a hawk or owl but we don’t know...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

HI! I had a Speckled Sussex get broody. I used the advise of the Chicken Chick and put her in a wire cage without bedding and up off the floor so the air circulated under her. I gave her a roost, too. The idea is so she can't easily nest and keep that breast all warm and toasty. She was...

    The Sussex thread!

ShamrockMommy, Nice! It would help to see the entire bird. My limited experience is that by 5 weeks you should be able to tell if it's a pullet or cockerel. Body shape and feathering helps. The head looks like a pullet.

    Jujubara - That's a pullet.

How much to feed free range layers

HI, Adding my 2 cents. I have 4 hens that are just over a year old. They are all free ranging over diverse 5 acres; give or take. I might be dreaming but what makes a huge difference in the amount of commercial feed is the access to water. I've put 3 water stations around the property...

Very disapointed with choice of chicken

I forgot to say they only get more fun to watch as they get older! You'll have to invite your friends over to chicken watch then they might just understand.

Very disapointed with choice of chicken

HI, Please don't get discouraged. I understand what you mean about seeing all the picks of people and their kids handling their chicks and the chicks look so tame and friendly. I don't know their secret except they must handle them ALOT. I do KNOW chicks get less fearful as they age and...

    Speckled Sussex: Roo or Pullet

The shape is the part that amazes me the most. Since I only had pullets the first time and now I have both it's easy to the different shape.

    Speckled Sussex Pullets and Cockerels

Bantam Lover, Yes, I' m sure that last one is a pullet but I agree that picture make it questionable. I probably shouldn't have posted it for a good example. Free Feather: Funny name! I'm hoping my roo with inspire a name. We aren't much for naming our flock but over time they've all come...

    Speckled Sussex: Roo or Pullet

Hi, I wouldn't worry about the white. These are all hens from last year and look at the white on them.
