I used a large dog crate too! I am still using it as their "gate" for the current set up. They are cheap to find on Craigslist and super handy. I actually used on as their inside brooder. I have cats and when the ducks were tiny I was worried. Turns out my cats are scared of duckling squeaks...
Mine are probably between 5 and 6 weeks now, they are Jumbo Pekins and are outside 24/7 with a heating pad in their cardboard box bed. They rarely use it anymore, they like to sleep under bushes now.
They are super happy and have been eating less and less of their feed as they forage more.
Hello! I have 3 Jumbo Pekins that I got from Rural King 5 weeks ago (it will be 5 weeks on Friday). I used a ton of tips I read on here, and ended up with VERY happy, healthy ducks. I could not believe how fast they grew, and how healthy they have been! I wanted to share what I implemented since...
Mama heating pad is amazing! Just search for it using the search bar on this forum. Basically it is just using a heating pad instead of a heat lamp for warmth. The benefits are the chicks wont be in light 24/7. They will be happier and healthier for that alone. It is also much easier for them to...
My jumbo pekins never used the heating pad when they were housed inside. They were probably around a week old when I got them. I had it in there with them but they avoided the heat.
I moved them outside when they were probably around 4 weeks old. They have mama heating pad in their coop and...
Yes, actually you can barely see the sliver of the brewers yeast tub in the picture :) I mix it in their feed and added dried worms to the tub when there was about half a cup left. I shook it around and it coated the dried worms, so even their treats are supplemented now! And they started...
Boys will be dinner, we are getting chickens in July and I don't want to deal with boy ducks trying to mate my chickens. I *think* I have 2 females and one male. The one I think is a boy has been bigger the whole time, I call him big boy :) The girls are Delilah Bell, she is the friendliest, and...
Yes, they never used it. I was kind of bummed! I did such a good job making it for them ;) They would however peck away at it happily :) I kept it in there, and on, until this past weekend. They were thrilled when I took it out and they got more room to run around. Now when I put them outside...
I feel your pain! I got mine on the 2nd, they are jumbo pekins and are starting to get their white feathers. They are big enough now where I can put them outside in the grass in a large wire dog crate with no bottom for a few hours a day. That helps cut down on the cleaning. I am using an XL...
I have been making homemade duck waterers with 2 liter soda bottles and gallon water jugs after seeing that thread. They work GREAT! I highly recommend. I also did the "mama heating pad" instead of a heat lamp. I got 3 ducklings and they never needed it, they just cuddled for warmth. They are...
I was actually looking at the red one (the ugly one), but then remembered I have a chest about that size. I am just going to use that. So OP if you have a wood chest you dont use, or one you find on craigslist, that would work too :) It is not hard to retrofit at all. Some paint, hinges, and...
I am so sorry to hear about your flock. I would probably show up, supplies in hand, and ask if I could clean up the feathers from their yard. But I am in WI so there is good chance the feathers would blow away before I could get my shoes on.
