You're right they are easy to tell pretty early. It of my 8 straight run l had six hens and two roosters. I got lucky. They are just beginning to lay now. Love the darker egg color. Much different than my Welsummer and marans.
My 16 ducks share a pasture with my 4 goats and the grass is fine. They have numerous water tubs and l move them often. They do get very excited when l dump their tubs and will do their little dabbing move. I do have Muscovy though so maybe that is why l don't have an issue with my grass.
Many people use the electric dog bowls that keep the water from freezing. I have also heard of people using aquarium heaters but l don't know how safe that is. They also make heated buckets. Hope these ideas help.
