    Breeding a new chicken breed

Funny how two separate genotypes can come up with the same colour on roosters! Behind is a dark red shouldered Brahma, that I'm now giving away to a cousin. Front is a Salmon Faverolles that I shall use next with a few crosses. The Faverolles will get his own coop now!

Breed Science-- making a new breed.

Thanks! That's unfortunate! Yes they are! I love their beards and how it makes their combs stick out. They're quite clumsy sometimes too. Their run 😀 I'm using them for a probable beard, unless it makes their vision bad alongside a small hopefully forward pointing crest (unvaulted) from a...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

And here's a white faverolles from the same guy I picked my whites from years ago. Great laying strain, small beard and grow both quickly and mature to weights comparable to some mod sized Brahma's. I got him to see if I can fix these genes into my birds and breed out the white colour. Would...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

This is a gal that's born to a Brahma× Silkie cross (that's in the beginning of this thread). Note the tiny crest. This was the only one from the batch to have a comb. I'm keeping it as a reserve incase the spitz doesn't work (I hope two genes won't make the crest too big either). She has the...

Breed Science-- making a new breed.

Hey, all the best for your new breed! I'm commenting here so I can get updates 😊 I'm currently in process of creating a new breed too, albeit for a different reason and slightly different standard. So check it out. Has a bit of genetics involved too...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

The Spitz are great foragers! And they've been so alert about predators...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Getting these two. They aren't great standard for Orpingtons, but the mother lays well, and they finish to a good weight.

    Breeding a new chicken breed

She's beautiful!!! My faverolles don't have any impediment in vision inspite of those big beards too... Fingers crossed it'll get Carried on in crosses 😁

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Genetically bad scaled. I don't have a mite problem currently. He had it from the start, none of his batchmates have/had. The second flock I spoke about us a random group of laying hens, completely free-ranged, no supplimentary diet, and this guy to protect them 😅 I don't use those eggs to...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Not using him to breed. His legs are quite badly scaled- probably why his legs look so thick. (I had one hen with that issue, something I kept for only incubating other eggs- and guessing that's his mom 😅).

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Yes! That was the reason for choice of the Spitz over Polish chicken to begin with Because I won't be very sure. Also, I'd rather have a crest of a spitz, or as small as that of a legbar as a defining character, over vision impairment. I have a further cross with a Brahma from my Silkie cross...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

This was the question! I mixed in another question about vaulted genes together and made it super confusing 🤦 my bad! Thanks for taking the time to type this down 😊

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Understood. I'm definitely considering though. 😊 I had a Polish rooster, a blonde-white guy who was forever noisy too. Would sometimes get up at 1am to crow. 😅

    Breeding a new chicken breed

I'm attaching a picture of one of my Silkie hybrid crossed with a landrace× another hybrid of a landrace and Giriraja (read about the breed early on in this thread). He's a sibling that I let roam around with another flock of mine. This picture was a day after he returned fighting some other...

    Breeding a new chicken breed

Thank you very much! Yes, so the plan is to see if the beard impedes vision. If they do, that goes out. I do have a doubt. Are the crosses heterozygous or homozygous for crest genes? Heard that only two pairs of the crest gene create a vault in predisposed birds. So even if they carry the...
