After moving a year ago and having to give up our flock, we finally decided to get a new flock.
The base is made a pea gravel and 3 4x4 (8 feet)
Built walls up first (ply wood for the floor and the sides
The framing for the roof was next (going for a slanted roof)

Hi all,
We will be moving in a couple of months, and even if we won't be moving very far, we realize that the move may be complicated for our ducks: building a new pens and house in the snow may be complicated and keeping them at our old house while it sells is not ideal either.
We were...
I agree, I give mine some mealworms once they get in their house. After a while they get used to it and usually head to the house when they see me coming their way in the evening (if they are not already in).
We haven't let him too close to the ducks for now, there is always a fence between them.
He still has a hard time figuring out what is a chew toy and what is not.
The ducks don't seem too impressed by him anyway, they mostly ignore him :)
Thant's probably it then :)
It seems two of the new girls started to lay now. Both smaller eggs. One was kind of greenish.
I will have to pay attention to make sure they do not start laying everywhere in the pen :)
Hello,
One of my new ducks started laying sometimes last week end, but these eggs have been tiny.
You can see one in the picture, next to one of my KC egg.
The culprit is one of the following:
- a blue Swedish
- a Pekin
- one of 2 gold star hybrid
- one of 2 Rouen
I'm leaning towards...
Does your pen has a roof or anything that would prevent a flying predator to get in.
It could have been a hawk or an owl who flew in, killed them and ate whatever they could in the pen (since the pekins were probably too big to carry away).
We had that happen to a few of our ducks.
I've...
Well, a month or so later, there is still no quack but a clear raspy voice which sounds very like our former Rouen Drake. So we assume our Welsh Harlequin will be a drake :)
Everyone started to molt so we should have a confirmation idea once the molting is done .
Sorry for the loss.
I don't think the ducks will ever be big enough. We had a hawk kill our drake last winter (at least we think that's what happened).
I bought the predator tape after Miss Lydia mentioned it. We haven't had issues with Hawks since but I've seen a couple of them pretty close...
Now I'm a bit more (or less confused) though.
I went through her blog and it seems she actually has 2 drake and a duck. And if you look at the picture, you can see some curled tail feather on the one with the dark head.
Anyway, vacations are coming so we will wait until we come back. 2 weeks...
Ha! I was convinced it was a male and now I'm confused again :P
Well I guess we'll leave the whole troop together under our duck sitter watch and see if she decides to quack when we come back from vacation :)
Thanks for the tip
