Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

I'm familiar with the craftiness of raccoons. I do find it very hard to believe they could rip boards off a pallet (given that I have had to deconstruct a few pallets myself and it isn't that simple), but maybe pallets aren't made equal everywhere. But more than that, raccoons aren't dumb. I...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

Of course I would post photos if someone wanted to see our enclosures. Maybe you are envisioning some Poultry Palaces in the Hills, but I can assure you... wooden pallets and chicken wire are really not glamorous. I'm not sure why saying I have a half dozen enclosures set you off... maybe if you...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

Shoot, did I miss the "Monthly Meeting of the Very Poor Mountain Folk" where they decided everyone was going to share the same opinion? You don't know me. You don't know my community. I have no need to falsify our way of living out here. Just because I have the novelty of a phone (that was...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

First off, the OP stated that they have a secure, predator-proof coop. The problem is that the birds are being let out rather than remaining IN that coop. You misunderstood me completely... We are very poor mountain folk that get by largely on a trade/barter system and believing in the old...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

But who says absolutely that it diminishes quality of life? I think being ripped apart by a predator is what diminishes quality of life. Not everyone even lives in an area where they have the option of free ranging, and their birds do just fine if given proper care. I have half a dozen coops...

Chicken Names- whats your chickens name?

Ooh, have I posted here already?! I don't recall. So I'll post again :gig The Trio - Ellis (Brahma x roo) Amybyrd (we gave a goat named Amy and this bird came with the name Amy, so we had to distinguish them lol) & Dizzy (Icelandic hens) The Blue Pen - Tora (Opal Legbar pullet) Dawn & Misty...

Red tail hawks are toying with me and terrorizing my flock!

This is probably the unpopular opinion here, but... If you love your animals so much, why not build them predator-proof enclosures and don't let them out? It is so incredibly frustrating to me to hear/read about people wanting to kill predators for taking livestock that is essentially thrown...

Scammed by a buyer; what to do?

She told you about and brought the children exactly for this reason - Sympathy. Now she is using an illness, that maybe she really has or maybe is fictitious, as an excuse. This woman sounds like she will pull every line in the book to make YOU feel like the guilty party here. You have EVERY...

Neutering your Cockerals so they can live!

No worries! I ended up researching Java chickens, then the Isle of Java, the languages, the people, etc etc... I like to learn :) I will be devouring those websites this evening... thank you so much!

    Alright, I'm impatient! Lol

Thank you so much! So far, the majority of my "assorted bantams" are pullets... I guess I know how to pick 'em haha

Possible new addition - What is she?!

Thanks yall! As you can see, I am not familiar with cockerels who don't have elaborate tails :lau As a hoarder of roos, I still need this bird. Haha

Possible new addition - What is she?!

This bird is posted for sale on Craigslist and I ADORE HEEER. There is no breed listed, however, so I want to do some research to ensure she would be a good match for our chicken goals. Thanks!

Neutering your Cockerals so they can live!

You know what you could do that would be a heck of a lot cheaper and kinder for the birds? Make a separate coop for the boys. Simple. Or, if they don't get along with each other, then stag tie outs and barrel houses. Two of my favourite phrases are - "There are worse things than death" and "ANY...

    Alright, I'm impatient! Lol

Thank you! I adore this group of grow outs... I have so much variety in there! Holy heck!! I was wondering about the bit of beard/muff! That is amazing, thank you so much! I got a blue Barbu D'Uccle cockerel, thinking how nice he would look with my two blue OEGB pullets... But I guess these...
