I know it is not a chicken but thought someone might have some insight on this problem.
I found a pigeon the other day flaping around the yard. It was able to fly but could not land on it's feet or walk. I was easily able to catch it and I have had it in a cage. It's legs do not appear to be...
There is a window on the coop that opens out into the run, there is wire in the window frame inside to keep critters out when the window is open, and I keep the window open with a stick. Well my one small Barred Rock hen, real small looks like it is less then a month old and she is 2 years now...
For my run I use 1/4" 4x4 wire. Alot of animals can wiggle through a 1" hole, around me mink, weasels, rats, and snakes. We also have bears, various wild cars, and opossums but racoons are by far my biggest fear because they are so crafty. It is because of these animals that I keep the run and...

A picture of the before and after would help. I have had split beaks just seem to happen out of no where. I found it the beak is cut / filed back so the split is totally gone it will not come back. Once cut back if needed I file the beak to shape like it would normally be.

The first is a very very small Barred Rock hen. She is always at the bottom of the pecking order and was almost featherless, she learned to deal with the others by going to places they could not fit and did well in the group for about a year...
