I completely agree with this. I’ve been raising chickens since I was a kid and broodies always take their babies out in the cold. They wander around for quite some time before needing to reheat under her. My broodie in March thought her 3-4 week olds were old enough to be without a mom anymore...
So to start off this was my first time incubating eggs, I’ve had broodys this year and normally I let them hatch. But I wanted chicks that were more unique breeds you don’t find at the feed store and my last set of shipped eggs (Red blue laced wyandottes) I had under my broody, she abandoned...
UPDATE: Vet said he thinks she is limping from being picked on or hurting herself getting off the roost. He thinks she has coccidiosis because she does have diarrhea today and pooped in the office. So he is treating her with Albon, which he said is stronger than corrid and also has antibiotic in...
I finally was able to locate a livestock vet about 45 minutes from me that could see her. So I’m going to take her in at 3 today and see if I can figure out what’s happening.
I greatly appreciate your help!!! I will update after the visit with the vet.
Thank you for your reply!
Weather was still cold in April. We did have a recent temp spike to almost 100’s Monday through Thursday last week. The temp is now mid 70’s. I am unaware of any solvent or spillage. We live out in the country and have couple farming neighbors that live in the area...
In the past 2 months I am now on my 3rd limping hen. At the beginning of April I had two 1 year old red sex links start limping. One was worse than the other. I treated her for bumblefoot and she continued to decline until I put her down at the beginning of May because she started getting picked...
I think the heat spike is now exactly what happened. I decided to test out the incubator without eggs and water and just have my thermometer in there to see what it’s reading. It also does give me a history of temp and humidity within 24 hours. All afternoon my temp was reading 99.3. We left and...
Yes I had 2 thermometers/hygrometers inside my little giant since I’ve read reviews saying it was not accurate on the thermometer of the machine. I also used my meat thermometer just to triple check and the temp was staying right at 99 degrees.
I’ve never used an incubator before. I’ve been...
I have another post explaining my situation. Long story short, broody abandoned eggs. I tried to save and incubator I finally got yesterday had hunting above 80%.
Chick was alive and moving in the shell as of 3pm yesterday. As of today no movement at all. Looked just like the others I opened...
I also should add, day 21 now and no internal or external pips. I believe the eggs are running a day behind in development due to her leaving them to get cold.
I had a second lavender Orpington go broody the last week of March after my other Orpington was raising chicks. I quick bought eBay eggs (Red blue laced Wyandottes) to put under her. They didn’t ship for a few days and I didn’t receive them till April 4th. My bad mistake for first time shipped...
