    Horses!

I posted on this thread last year about getting the farm ready for horses again so drum roll please…. We finally have horses again! Two Friesian x Percheron yearlings and a POA. Note: the pictures with the rope halters on were what they arrived in on the first day. They were not turned out in...

Chick with both feet curled when resting

From what I have experienced with deficiencies you would be seeing it more than when she was sleeping at night. I have had a couple where they were at the age when they go from sleeping on the ground to roosting would assume a roost position on the ground before they actually started roosting at...

Chick with both feet curled when resting

Chickens naturally perch at night and to perch they curl their feet around something. It sounds like her body is naturally mimicking this process just on a flat surface. If she is fine everywhere else it’s just her equivalent of curling up for bed.

    Herb List?

Due to the rise of antibiotic resistance and restrictions other alternatives have started to be studied in poultry, mainly oregano. I think blogs, YouTube homesteaders and so on are about as factual as toddler babble. However, I do enjoy reading studies and research papers done on certain...

    Barred Rock Chicks

What breeds are your other chicks? Different breeds all grow at different rates. My brahama hen for example is huge, but as chicks my barred rock hen initially shot up much faster than my Brahma. My barred rock was larger up until she seemed to stop growing right around 4 months she reached...

Young cockerels- is it worth it to raise & butcher? Are there other options?

It’s fairly the same as making stock only you want to simmer the bones until they basically start to fall apart. I fill up my giant stock pot with water and the carcass along with whatever you usually like to add to stock. For mine when I am butchering I save the heart, neck and liver to add...

    2 week old outside question?

If they have a brooder plate they will be fine. I brood outside in the barn (my coop) from day 1 using a brooder plate and everyone does just fine.

Young cockerels- is it worth it to raise & butcher? Are there other options?

Do you make bone broth or your own stock? I have butchered bantam cockerels and a cockerel that was 5 weeks because he became a nightmare. They all made great bone broth!

What color would you call this Orpington cockerel?

Thanks! Her looking solid black for the first few months before lightening up really had me confused, but I prefer blue over black so her being a dark blue works for me!

Now is the time, drastically reduce your feed bill, drastically increase the harmony of the flock

Advertise the meat on Craigslist as “Free Chicken for Raw Dog Food”. Making your own raw dog food has become really popular lately and I always see people on Craigslist or asking around for leftover freezer meat, hunting and butcher scraps to make their own dog food.

What color would you call this Orpington cockerel?

She’s beautiful! I always have loved blues. This is the other blue pullet that came in the box. I guess I am just used to my blue Marans that seem to be so much lighter compared to the blue orpingtons.
