We actually did something like this years ago as our brooder/young chick coop..the only thing to know is that they leak like nuts. We enclosed the windows with plexiglass we had, but never really could get it water tight. Super cute though
Donrae, this is GREAT info! I'll refer back to this if we sprout another one next Spring (assuming all parties cooperate), that looks similar. I wondered what sexlinks were all about.
I wonder what sorts of chicks he'll produce. The neighbor has a variety of girls. So ... do male sexlinks...
Me too, Troy! Thanks for your thoughts on this. It's always distressing to lose a bird, especially when it just seems to happen out of nowhere!
BTW, I love your profile picture of your puppies! They're darling!
I agree, they are tough. But they're native around here and we do see them frequently. More and more lately it seems. We have a lot of hawks at all times, and those are typically are biggest predators. The pen for our own birds is under trees, which typically deter the hawks from swooping down...
AHA! Apparently we have a bald eagle in the area that's taken to chickens and swooped in for a feast. The neighbors caught sight of it this morning. Unfortunately, that's a tough one to stop, so they're going to have to put up a net, etc., of some sort. And, like us, they have a big pen for...
Well ... after listening to Junior crowing away (albeit with a baby crow) and talking with a neighbor, we've re-homed him. Thankfully, they needed a roo and were delighted to have him, so he's quickly moved on to a new home with his own little harem in waiting.
Thank you all for your thoughts...
A fox is probably a really good thought, but I don't think we have wild foxes around here. Maybe. We're in an area just south of Seattle. Lots of other critters, but I don't know that I've ever seen a fox running around.
So ... this one is about 12 1/2 weeks old. Dad is a "mutt," while Mom is a barred rock.
We're trying to figure this out because he/she seems to be crowing, exchanging comments frequently with our big rooster. Doesn't look like I would expect a teenage rooster to look, but he/she's crowing! lol...
I agree ... a photo will be best. I'll get out there and try again. The photos I have are a bit blurry as I was trying to take it with my smartphone instead of my camera. ... Soon!
So ... our neighbor called to report (and warn us), that something killed one of her hens yesterday afternoon. She said that there were tons of feathers, and just the intestines left. And that she's positive it was in the middle of the afternoon.
My guess was that it sounded like a cat of some...
So ..
We have six teenagers, hatched out in mid-April. One of them is crowing, I swear. And yet, he/she doesn't have any features I would expect to start seeing in a young rooster. Very small comb, not particularly bigger than anyone else. No sign of wattles at all. No sign of spurs. He looks...
Well, we don't know what to think. She's not getting worse I don't think, but she's not getting better either. The Corid treatment is done and she's still eating really well. But she's still hiding in the nesting boxes and her backside was really dirty. I did clean her up this evening and dried...
Thanks so much for this suggestion! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help.
I'm a wee bit hesitant right now to do this though only because she's getting this Corid for cocciodosis (hope I've spelled that right). I feel like we need to complete this treatment, which ends on Monday...
