Thanks everyone. We took your advice and built a teenager pen and put it in our coop. When we picked up our new chicks I was surprised to see how small they are (even though they are feathered out) so I am glad to have them in a safe pen. We have a lid o it now... not in pic.

I have the same cast iron waffle maker and have used the recipe that comes with it. The recipe IS the problem. You have to add a LOT more liquid to the recipe. I just used water. Add enough till the batter becomes pourable. Its kind of hard to incorporate the extra water, since the batter is so...
