The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I heard about a guy in a gated community who simply called them"jungle fowl"too classify them as pets. I think he has over 30 laying hens! Sometimes you just have to think outside the box! It's a stupid box anyhow! Who wants tip think in a stupid box? ! ;-)

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

We had a broody that ended up with dud eggs. She wasn't happy with chicks around unless we removed eggs. The chicks we put under her were even 1 week old. She fussed a bit then took them in. I wouldn't disturb her unless there are no other options. Also, you need to find a way to seperate her...

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

We just lost another duckling for no apparent reason. The drake is in there with mom and babies. I also took out deep bowls and our on something shallow. Do I need to separate them?

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

We have ducklings! This is the first time we've hatched ducks and we're really excited but also a bit sad. 11 hatched while we were out today. When we found out, 4 had drowned. Not sure what happened. Does anyone have experience with ducks who can give me tips?

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I'm hatching our first duck eggs this year! Yay! Our mallards, Cheese & Quackers, decided to start brooding right on time. I was hoping to make Cheese a better home before she went broody. Oh well, can't control motherhood! I'm also going to try and use an incubator this year. Never used one...

Should I leave eggs under chicken

This is the Chicken Coop and Run I designed. We like it because we installed a removable shelf and removable perched inside the coop. It really makes cleaning easy. However, as you can see, the ramp is rather narrow and steep. That's why I'm worried about our chicks managing it well. I'm...

Should I leave eggs under chicken

If you find an answer to this, let me know. We have our coop/run about 2 feet off the ground. I have the hen inside the coop with her eggs but I don't know what I should do after they hatch. Our chickens get up and down off the ramp okay but I'm not sure the chicks can follow momma outside with...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I did check the remaining eggs last night and they were all dead. I was suspicious because it had been a week later than their anticipated "due date". They were all brown eggs so they were a bit more difficult to candle. One had developed briefly but it had a dark ring around it. (I've been...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I need some help. This is the first time we've had a hen "Go Broody" and, of course, we are having a cold, snowy spring. We have also been raising chickens for about 3 years now so we are very inexperienced. We've only purchased chicks at the farm store or mail order. We had one chick hatch 4...

Ended Official BYC Contest: Worst Chicken Molt Pictures - Fall/Winter 2012

I am so glad I saw this contest and all the photos! This is the first molt I've been through and I was just SURE that I had done something wrong. My chickens are looking pretty manky right now. In fact, I was beginning to wonder if I had a problem with mites. However, now I think it's just the...

    Is this Bumblefoot?

I think I even know where some Emu Farmers are in my area of southern Iowa. I know I see them every year at the Iowa State Fair. Maybe I'll check into that! (By the way, if you've never been to the Iowa State Fair, you need to add it to the "To Do List". I could go every day and be thoroughly...

    Is this Bumblefoot?

What is making me uncertain is the fact that it's on top of his foot, in between his toes. I thought Bumblefoot appeared on the bottom. The other thing worrying me is the mice and rats we have in the barns & coops right now. I'm trying to "take care of them", as an old mobster might say, but I...

Can I keep 3 cockerells together?

I have 3 "Special Needs" Cockerells. They are Production Reds and are missing significant portions of their feet and one is missing part of of a wing. Because they have trouble walking sometimes, don't perch well or fly well, I have segregated them from my other chickens. They are wonderful...
