Fresh from incubator. How do I help this chick?

Bumping up because I have one similar but it’s also extremely cheapy so I think it’s uncomfortable. I did soak a bit off but still mucky.

    Unassisted hatch rate

I’ve don’t think I’ve lost a chick that hatched itself. I’ve had some that never hatch for whatever reason. I have lost many of my assisted hatches mostly with leg and toe issues to the point I really question whether it’s worth it. But I can’t see a little pipped beak and not at least try to...

    Hands on hatching and help

Spraddle leg, assisted hatch and survival rates q. Almost every hatch I’ve done I seem to get one chick with spraddle legs. I have switched to a better quality feed show breed specific feed, added vitamin supplements to the water, have non stick stuff in the incubator. This last hatch was...

    Weak chick

Hey I have had a pretty successful hatch but have one chick that seems pretty sleepy and is getting stepped on. I did try to get some save a chick or similar a couple of days ago to be prepared but couldn’t find Any. I do have some electrolyte stuff here but it’s for older chooks. Can I use...

    Raising Chicks In a Portacot

How do you plan to handle clean up at the end? I feel like the fabric could be hard to clean and probably more prone to mould or rotting if it gets damp. Otherwise under the verandah should be fine, you can always bring them in the house if there’s a hot spell. I wouldn’t have chicks in there...

    Broody mum squashing chicks

Maybe? They like these green layer boxes we have to sit in but I could possibly. I’m a little nervous now. for what it’s worth she doesn’t have to jump in she just does. The other hens all manage fine. It’s just the way she does it but maybe eliminating that would work. For the moment we...

    Broody mum squashing chicks

Ok I will check that. The other silkies are all very careful but she literally jumps in and lands on the chicks

    Broody mum squashing chicks

So one of dds silkies has a bad batch earlier in the year where she only hatched two and both died. It was less than ideal set up and we assumed it was that. However she’s in a good place now and with this batch has trampled two out of 7. Would you take the rest away? She seems very clumsy...

    7 dead in 1 night

Yes this! We were delayed with lockup time (as in 10 mins past sundown) and Fox wiped out all except two from one coop. Was a while ago now.

    How many roosters to keep?

I can manage two Roos with my 10 girls but they are australorp and really laid back. Any more than that and they seem to fight. The only exception is when I had to separate one for bumblefoot. As soon as I put him back the other guy beat him up.

    7 dead in 1 night

With mine I’ve had multiple kills at night or just on dusk but only singles during the day Think they are a bit more cautious at daylight

Feeding wheat to free range chickens

Cost mainly Due to drought the chook feed costs are going pretty crazy but I managed to get some feed wheat cheapish. ($35 for a bag that does us 2 weeks if we’re lucky) It also looks way cleaner and better than what’s mixed in the layer mix. The quality of the layer feeds seems to have...

Feeding wheat to free range chickens

Hi. I am purchasing some wheat for chicken feed. I’m currently feeding a complete layer mix but to be honest the grain in it isn’t looking that great I think due to drought. My chooks are currently free range and it’s spring here so there’s a lot of green feed and insects. They do get some...

    Has this happened to anyone?

The chick tangled again and died. And now happened to a second chick that was over a week old, perfectly healthy and running around and tangled around the neck. Do I trim the feathers on the mums? Will they still be able to keep the chicks warm. I can take the chicks away and put them in the...

    Has this happened to anyone?

It has eaten some but is generally weak. Could have been vitamin deficiency in the hen? Doesn’t appear injured but the brooding and hatch location was less than ideal but every time we tried to move the hen she’d get cranky and go back to the same spot. I don’t think we’ll let her sit again
