My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

HAPPY EASTER ALL! I thought I would post a follow up pic to show how my coop has held up. Short answer is GREAT! About the only change is that my "foundation" stones have settled just a bit. I probably shoulda dug a little deeper to place the stones. The Pallet Coop has held up well to...

Glad to hear your experience has been that they are long-lived, Jean. I have one and she is our favorite chicken. She loves to be snuggled and petted. Had a chicken hawk hanging around so we brought her in the house. She has a Rubbermaid tub for a "coop" in the den, and will fly across the room...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Hi Mommafox, glad you liked my coop! I don't have blueprints, but purchased a plan from My Pet Chicken.com. I paid 15.00 for them and downloaded the plans straight to my computer. The plans have detailed instructions and pictures, and were more of a building style than exact blueprints. You can...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Thanks ChickenRisa! Been a while since i've been on. I need to post some pics of how my coop has weathered. Other than some oxidation to the tin roof, it looks great!

Does anyone else give your Polish "haircuts"?

I've read that Polish are somewhat high maintenence compared to other breeds....one reason being that they can't see as well due to impaired vision from their crests blocking vision. As a result, they can be more prone to injury. I get around this by giving my Polish 'haircuts'. It works well...

On the middle joint prize apart the joint with a pry bar enough to get a sawzall blade inside the joint, then switch to a metal cutting blade and cut the nails in half. A sawzall is definitely a good tool for breaking down pallets, but not the tool I used. look back to the very beginning of my...

Soffit or not? Another ventilation question.

I would not soffit. I didn't, and also vented the roof along the ridge, then covered the ridge vents with a ridge cap. My thought was that air would draft in under the overhangs and vent out the ridge line. I'm sure it does this as planned, but that in the heat of summer this wasn't enough...my...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Thanks to all for the compliments! This thread has gotten alot of traffic and I'm glad. It was one way I could give back to the BYC Forum community, because most of what I learned for raising my back yard flock was from this website. When I decided to build my coop out of pallets and did a...

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Have Chickens - Select All That Apply

Great Poll. I replied eggs, pets (all 17 of our girls have names), and for my "other" as an educational experience for my children. We live in the city...wanted my kids to have the experience of raising chickens.

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

My walls are 42inches (12 boards x 3.5inches) in height. Fence pickets would be perfect, because you would be saved the work of breaking down pallets. if you used fence boards, you would let the width of the boards determine your wall height. For example, you wouldn't want to to rip a board in...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Weaslyemum, you are correct I used the plans as an instruction/construction method. The coop is very close to 6x4 feet, probably within an inch or so of those dimensions. The side with the windows/shutters is 6 feet. The pitch of the roof is fairly steep too, mostly because I just like that...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Hi SF411 thanks for the compliments. I used the plans more as a construction guide than as an exact plan. I can't remember now, but I think the original plans specified 4ft x4 ft, and you math would be correct that's 16 sq feet good for 4 birds. However, I built mine 6 feet by 4 feet (24sq...

My 4x6 Pallet Coop Build (Completed, PIC HEAVY)

Thanks Buggs Beaks! I have 13 chickens using this coop. It is a cinch to clean, standing next to the coop when I open the access door its about waist height. Pallet construction are great for tight budgets because the wood is free, just takes the sweat equity. six chickens is the ideal number...
