I love these chickens. The only way they could get better is if there was a strain that laid brown eggs. If you like a pretty, small, very spunky bird, that lays L-XL white eggs and don't mind the stereotypical standoffish attitude, these birds are for you. I'd like to get more this spring.
I really enjoy my leghorns. No they aren't cuddly, yes they run away, but we respect one another so to speak. If I were to get more of the same breed, do you think buyers would be willing to buy white eggs?
Hi there! I'm new to BYC. I'm from SW Pennsylvania. I've had chickens before but this is my first time raising them all alone. I've got a year under my belt now, and at the ripe old age of 17 I made my first sale today! Need to keep up with feed cost some how. This site is great for advice. Glad...
I'm considering the purchase of some brown layers do buyers can have some option ( idk why they have to be so picky!) I love the high efficiency of leghorns. Little feed, a lot of eggs! So reliable. Any recommendations for a breed similar to it in productivity, but with brown eggs?
I tried that with dried meal worms today. They love the treat, petrified of me. Will not eat from my hand. You'd think I kick them or something. Are certain breeds predisposed to nervous behaviors?
I have white leghorns. Beautiful white eggs. I'm beginning to sell/give away my eggs and it annoys me when people assume they're not farm fresh because they're white! Think I should raise some brown layers for next season?
What do you think? White eggs or brown. Seems like people around here associate brown eggs with being farm fresh, but I have hens that lay white eggs and there as fresh as can be. Why do people prefer brown?
My white leghorns recently did the same thing. Was there a sudden temp change in your area? Cause it got real hot here in Pennsylvania and they decided to quit laying for a little while. Just give em time. Is there maybe anything in the coop stressing them out?
I scrambled up a few of my eggs today. Aside from the skin like membrane under the shell, the egg has a consistency i don't see in store bought eggs. The whites are pretty thick and don't really mix in with the yolk. Is this typical?
Ive had my leghorns about a year now, they're very skittish. Don't even like to be near people. Maybe it's the breed or just the chickens themselves :/
