Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

I'll mark this as answered, since federal prohibition pretty much cinches it and a number of good alternatives have been offered. Thank you

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: I like that suggestion. Thank you silkiechicken, you have offered a lot of thoughtful suggestions, and I really appreciate your willingness to discuss practical aspects and solutions. I felt that this was an important subject that would benefit from discussing with others who have more...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: This could very well be the case, but it is something I would like to know more about. (I would disagree with the first part about caring for my animals, though I would question whether humans killing chicks is better than it being done by animals that are built to prey on them.) Death...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: Thanks for mentioning fish and game, I'll try to see what I can find about it but if anyone knows specifically if feeding hawks is prohibited, I'd like to know too.

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: Not really, but having owned carnivorous reptiles, I find killing in itself to be a waste when there are animals that would be more than happy to take it. So dispatch them humanely THEN let the animals have it. I'm not seeing the need to have a live chicken killed intentionally by a...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: I live in a suburban area, so one could say there are wildlife issues in the area, and wildlife populations has been decreasing here for some time. I don't think that they are starving, but I think it could be a mutually beneficial situation if I did offer them chicks. I am more...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Quote: That would be a good option, but the size of my bantams are hardly enough except for a hawk, and I do appreciate local wildlife and wouldn't mind letting them have the meal. For other posts that mention the possibility of attracting hawks to my other birds, I do keep them in enclosures...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

I haven't seen another thread on this topic so decided to post here. I was wondering what people think about intentionally leaving chicks and juvenile birds out to be taken by hawks. As you can guess, I am considering my options for unwanted cockerels, if my chicks turn out to be males. The best...

Need help with new babies and reintroduction to flock

Although it's not technically joining the flock, I found a couple sources that say the chicks leave the hen at about 3 months. "Chicks are fully feathered by four to five weeks of age, are chased out of the nest at about 12 weeks, and reach sexual maturity at about five months."...

Will 1 chick be ok by itself?

I have a sortof related question: When does a chick outgrow crying? I have 3 chicks hatched from incubator and they're 3.5 weeks old now. If I take one out of direct line of sight of the other two it will scream nonstop. (Or do they never outgrow it?)

Do Quail or Chickens have a better feed to meat ratio?

I'm just a newbie to raising birds but I thought I'd throw out some of my random thoughts on the two options... I've seen a couple publications that say it's about 3 lbs feed to 1 lb edible weight (maybe closer to 4 to account for growing chicks) for quail. The one I've posted below also...

    Hello from So Cal

Hi! I just got my first 2 serama chickens a couple months ago, which I love for their tinyness. I found BYC in my search to learn how to care for them and I have learned a ton from the people on this forum, as well as gaining an appreciation for the many(!) kinds of chickens out there. The...
