Grow with us! Week by Week Progression of Straight Run Chicks.

Thanks for the response and follow-up! I know, sometimes they get an email notification/prompt. Yes, I was looking at this as a temporary (day only) option; I agree, it would need improvements to be predator safe or for a more permanent use.

Grow with us! Week by Week Progression of Straight Run Chicks.

Hi there! Were you right? Also, can I ask where you got that low profile black wire run from? I'd love to check it out - thanks!

Picking this thread back up (just placed my 1st chick order with them for the fall after drooling over them for years) - what did they turn out being?

What would an Olive egger crossed with a Wyandotte be ?

I do not, but this site is such a good resource! Give the search bar a whirl with different keywords. Here's a couple of links to get you started: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/golden-laced-wyandotte-x-easter-egger-new-pics.310412/...

What would an Olive egger crossed with a Wyandotte be ?

Likely a green Easter egger- offspring would either lay 50% brown or 50% green ala this chart (from here: https://silverhomestead.com/genetics/)

    Olive egger thread

Time will tell... but it's looking 50/50 at the moment: OE#1's comb turned red at 3 weeks. OE#2's comb is getting larger too, and pinkish, but more concerning is that it is growing RAPIDLY in size - I swear it's grown about double the size of OE#1 over the past couple of weeks and generally...

Planning Chick Integration of 2 groups - 1 group with Mama Hen & 1 separate brooder group

Well, a bit of an update. It's been a journey and still in progress/flux. After this last post, I another hen went broody for the first time (they say it's contagious...). I let her sit for a week thinking I could transfer the other chicks to her. I penned her up with the chicks for a day and a...

    Prairie Bluebell

I think the possibility is low but there - I have 4 PBEs and only one hen has a beard/muff (and a floppy comb). This breed (my brood at least) are quite prolific layers, usually 6 days/week. My other PBEers are actually in the background of this photo. This little one looks like some of my...

    Olive egger thread

Thank you for posting this! My feed store received olive eggers from Privett and I have been curious what they may look like since the Privett website is currently down. This store had some pictures of Privett olive egger birds (chicks and adult hen) but no picture of the eggs-...

Planning Chick Integration of 2 groups - 1 group with Mama Hen & 1 separate brooder group

Thank you so much for providing your perspective and advice! That's probably the most straightforward (and safest) approach for all birds involved. I was hoping to find a way forward since I wanted to keep one specific chicks (breed) from the human-raised flock, but I'll shortlist the breed...

Planning Chick Integration of 2 groups - 1 group with Mama Hen & 1 separate brooder group

Fair! I saw this all as an "experiment" to see if this specific hen that was going broody every month could actually "rear" the chicks she was instinctually yearning for. I was annoyed having to "broody break" her monthly by putting her in the dog kennel in the run. She's a prairie bluebell...

Planning Chick Integration of 2 groups - 1 group with Mama Hen & 1 separate brooder group

Hi there- Thanks for the quick response! A few answers: I run a “compact” backyard (residential area) operation. The enclosed, predator safe coop/run is ~6’x10’ (60SF), the coop portion being ~6’x4’ and with 3 nest boxes (27SF total; so 87SF total in the enclosed area). They have daily access...

Planning Chick Integration of 2 groups - 1 group with Mama Hen & 1 separate brooder group

Hi there- I’m hoping for some advice on chick integration. I have 7 chicks, all the same age, some of differing breeds. Broody/mama hen is a Prairie Bluebell Egger. I used the night time approach for placing the chicks under her. The following early morning, this first-time broody hen rejected...
