    Sexing Chicks

Somebody told us at our local Atwoods that you can tell the Roosters from the Hens when they are chicks by a gap between the primary and secondary flight feathers on the wings. I haven't tested this myself, so I was wondering if that is actually accurate. This is only our second year hatching...

Drastic Drop in Number of Eggs

I'm not sure how big the coop is but it's large. I'm pretty sure when we designed it we planned on 50 layers. We've built 16 nest boxes into the side of it. My husband would know more about the size, I'd have to measure to be sure. I think production came up just a tad yesterday. The kids help...

Drastic Drop in Number of Eggs

I have a total of 38 hens, thirteen are about 17 months old and molting. I know these girls have probably stopped laying for now. (Can I expect them to start again and when?) Our egg production has gone from 24-29 eggs a day to 6-10 eggs per day. The other remaining hens, aside from the 13 I...

    What breed are these two?

She lays a light brown egg and has neither wattles or a beard. I don't know that the rooster is the same breed as she is. Her coloring is so very similar to the brown leghorn but she has a completely different comb. Her body structure is different as well, she is more plump compared to the leghorns.

    What breed are these two?

I bought chickens from a local feed store a while back and I have identified all but two. Could you help me out? There are two pictures of each one. Thank you.

How to move hen and eggs/hatched chicks

My Buff went broody and we let her have some eggs. She decided to go broody in the nest box. This is our first time doing this. I tried in the past moving my broody hens before they got too settled and they just quit on me. So this time I decided to leave here. The problem is the nest box is...

    Brooding and Incubating

Thank you, yes your response if helpful. I tried chicken wiring off a separate section of the coop for them and put them in the nest boxes there, but as I said they wanted the boxes they had chosen. We'll figure something out. I'm pretty sure she is going to stop setting if I move her. None of...

    Brooding and Incubating

Hhhhmm, I may leave her and try to create a safer situation for the babies then. I had three looking broody. Two Buff's and a Bantam. However, when I created a brooding spot for them they decided they didn't like that place and stopped. We also have baby goats and rabbits here.Cocker Spaniel...

    Brooding and Incubating

Hello all, I haven't properly introduced myself. I've been a reader, your posts have been very informative. I'm not new to chickens, we've raised them off and on for about 10 years now. I am new however to hatching my own chicks. So I made a barter with a friend to get one of her incubators...

    Getting Guineas

We are getting 1 year old guineas, 2 males and a female. We've never had them before. What should I expect to do with them once we get them home? Should I try to confine them for a while before letting them free range?
