Well if the orchard trees are a at least a few feet tall they will be providing some cover themselves.
I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable letting my chickens roam around my garden or orchard just b/c of how destructive they are. Plus, no matter how many trees or shrubs you put out there...
I'm around the border of zone 8a/8b. The pigeon peas may not make it through my winters but if they do well I'll reseed them each spring I guess. I haven't grown many peas before so maybe their not much different but what I read was how prolific they were and could actually serve as trellis...
I'm pretty sure any type of ground cover / nitrogen fixing plants you can get to grow in your wood chips / mulch is beneficial. I watch all kinds of permaculture/food forest videos and ground cover is definitely part of it all. One of the reasons I planted strawberries on my hugelkuture was the...
Hey everyone,
I'm hoping to join in this thread if that is okay. I'm not able to read all 49 pages of the previous discussions but looking forward to participating going forward and share updates on my garden/orchard.
I moved to the coast of NC for a new job last January and we bought a house...
Could be. The roost inside the coop is higher then the nests. well there are 2 levels and one is even with and the other higher. But the bridge which goes into the window is higher than all that, and as they come into the coop from the window they come down, which usually the entrance to a coop...
So anyone know about how much to feed each chicken of the fermented feed? I think the link above said maybe a cup per chicken? It says whatever they can eat in about 30 minutes. So is feeding them once a day fine? I would be nervous about am I feeding them enough or not.
Dry pellets right now, but thinking about starting to ferment them. Then I throw them food scraps and let them walk around my backyard during the day. Also have oyster shells and grit in a container for them.
Sorry for the last response.
So the chickens do use the "bridge" as it is the only way for them to get into their coop. They are able to pass by each other when one is in the way in one is going by.
I have ran into one problem that I haven't figured out a solution to.
They all have no problem...
My leghorns are the only ones that are still able to get over the fence, the are a little smaller than the comets who haven't been getting out. Maybe I do need to clip the wings closer to the body. We just got chickens about 3 weeks ago so I'm pretty new and didn't want to cut them by mistake.
Yea I had only clipped the one wing and they were getting out, so I clipped the other side. Some how they are just able to jump and flap real hard and able to get just enough lift to get on top of the fence then jump over. Luckily they just go into the shed when they do it trying to get to the...
Snow won't be an issue, we are on the coast of NC.
I have a nice sized backyard. Most of the yard is fenced in, then I have some side yard that isn't fenced and the shed is on that side. I didn't want to have to cut a hole in my shed or the fence, so I decided to make this bridge into the...
