    Hawk!

We have a lot of Red Tailed Hawks in this area and I'm just waiting for one to discover my little flock of hens. I've heard that you can hang some CD's on strings around the yard that apparently are a deterrent to birds of prey. I've thought I might try that if I ever have an issue.

    Neighbors setting up for disaster

That's just crazy! Don't people do any reading? There was a heartbreaking story posted on BYC detailing the loss of this woman's hen and week old chicks. I think the predator got through a gap that was less than a foot tall and at the top of the coop. If you can find that story and show the mom...

Is this hen ready to lay??

My BR looks just like yours and the same age! What caught my eye was her tail feathers. The pullet I'm referring to lost those spikey feathers which lead me to believe she was in a small molt of sorts. Has yours always had spikey tail feathers? By the way, no eggs here yet!

very sick chicken - rest of flock at risk?

Hello 6512andgrowing, I am pretty new to the chicken world but your post struck me because my Ameraucana is acting in a similar manner. I still don't know what is wrong but she has perked up today. Have you looked up sour crop? It may provide some clues or eliminate one from the list. My girl...

I Need Your Opinions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please :)

We have a few breeds but the BO are by far the friendliest and most easily handled girls of them all. I hear they are good layers(they're still young) but can be broody. Good thing I bought those as pets for my daughter so we'll have them for the duration - nice enough that I don't mind keeping...

Pictures of Coop Construction. The first real build is DONE!

Do you have wire covering your vents at the top? Very nice. We just built a coop and it's no small job.

When and how do you introduce your babies to the flock?

I liked the dog crate idea and have been using it to introduce two older hens to my flock of 6 pullets. The older hens are at the top of the pecking order - no question. It's been over a month and the old gals still go to the crate. Funny enough, they use the nesting box in the coop to lay their...

Cull by hawk? *Answered* Thank you

Yikes! I hear the killing process used by birds of prey is pretty horrific - better to sell them or do it yourself - quick style. The other really bad consequence is to put the sign out to the all the hawks in the area that there's a quick, easy meal to be had at your place.

    laying pellets

I have my 16 week pullets with 2 year old hens and have both crumbles and pellets available. The older girls eat the crumbles like it's the best thing they've ever tasted, leaving me no choice but to ensure oyster shell supplements are available. I'm impressed the little guys will pick around at...

how often do you clean out the coop?

I read an article that said chicken raising should be a 10 minute a day process - for us small flock keepers. I liked that idea and have been sticking to it. I rake the straw in the coop to freshen it up and keep the flies away, pick up the really messing droppings under the roost, replace a...
