Do you really think so?? That would be so cool! He is such a sweet little friend and makes the oddest scratchy vocalizations! I’m glad we named her/him PeeWee instead of Princess or something 😆
Single comb, slate legs, teal/purple earlobes, a striking variety of feather colors. She started chipmunk, and I assumed I’d be able to figure out what she is later…but she’s 10 weeks and I can’t seem to find a google match?? Any ideas?
Just FYI - I took down the light when I put the brooder plate in 😅 just so there’s no confusion about the high heat.
I’ve lifted one end of the brooder plate high, and the chicks keep heading toward the hottest spot of the plate…which means they’re ok with the heat, I guess??? I just don’t want...
Hey! So I reconfigured the set up, brooder significantly larger with the cool end at 80-83 and the hot end at 95. I wanted to get the cool end closer to 70, so I put a brooder plate in (I’ve never used one before).
The brooder plate surface temp reads 138 with my heat gun 🤯🥵 I’ve checked it...
They all fell asleep in a pile last night - but they were in the middle of the brooder (against the wall), so I assumed they’d move to the hot end if they were cold? The temp at the cool end read 93, so I can’t imagine they were too cold?
I was definitely worried about this, so I made sure I checked the temp several times. It stayed between 94-95 on the hot end, and they slept almost in the middle of the brooder (by the wall).
There are responses saying it might have been too hot! 😖😵💫 I hadn’t considered it being too hot, I...
I’ve read that chicks need 90-95 for the first week of life - how cool is too cool for the cool end? I’m reading mixed info online…70 for the cool end seems most common? That seems really cool for new hatchlings?
I didn’t. I got them at IFA? They said they had just gotten them in that day - and the BLW brooder was unheated (I was there when they noticed and called to get the lights on 🥴). I’m so sorry for your loss 💔
Yes - makes sense. We’ve had this same set up for the last few years (the light bulb is hung higher up on the wall, so it doesn’t get hotter in the brooder than 95). My question is - if it IS the heat, why did it only kill two of them? Is it possible to have some chicks be more sensitive than...
