Looking to Buy Laying Chickens ~ Texas

I'm going to be looking for a new flock of laying hens before too long. Located in S. Texas. I currently have Golden Sexlink hens. Not terribly crazy about them. looking to get another breed, or a mix of breeds. Not real particular as long as they aren't weird and are decent layers. Please...

    Pest x Predator Interaction

Speaking of things caught in netting... Last summer I had that black plastic deer netting around my chicken run. Unfortunately, my cattle just went right through it, and lots of it tore off and fell to the ground at the bottom of my posts. Being lazy, I left it there until I could clean it up...

Love those kestrel pics! I sure enjoy seeing them around.

    My first loss...

About the only way to assure protection is to have them completely enclosed at all times. This hawk swooped down on my chickens as they retreated to their enclosed coop. He followed them right inside. I was close by, and snapped the picture after closing the gate on it so I could separate him...

RoosterDad, I don't know what you scratched yourself with in that OP photo, but it sure wasn't a bobcat.

    Any ideas?

Based on elongation of the track in the topmost picture, I'll go with coyote. Or canine of some sort. It may be a medium size dog as well, or even a bobcat, because the tracks are not clear. But canine tracks are certainly elongated like the top pic.

    Protecting Your Flock From Predators

Yes. In the pattern of a target. With the bullseye being where the animals are kept day and night as the most attention, and then ranging out from there.

    Protecting Your Flock From Predators

Soon I will do some work on a write up dealing with different scenarios where depredation is an issue with chickens and other animals you may keep at your homes or acreage. There's a balance and reason for most everything, and if recurring problems arrise, it's probably because something is out...

    Texas

My place is outside Victoria, little wide spot with an old dance hall, called Schroeder. Raising cows, catfish, and few chickens. Lots of wildlife. Deer, hogs, turkey, and evidently chicken hungry red tailed hawks.. :) looks like Texas has quite a presence here!

Thank you, Alexa! I'm pretty new to chickens, but have lots of experience with lots of other animals. Chickens are different for me though. ;)

A Hawk Is Killing Our Chickens. What should I do?

I may end up doing so. Wasn't really wanting a rooster, but try that if I lose anymore chickens.

    Fox trouble

I have two standard schnauzer dogs. I take them out at night to do their business, and 2-3 times a week, the fox will be out front. My younger dog will give chase... Then come back empty handed of course. Dogs chasing the fox doesn't even slow them down. I go back in with the dogs, and the fox...
